So oder ähnlich könnte es in ein paar Wochen heißen, wenn die Inspektoren unverrichteter Dinge aus dem Iran zurückkommen. Das Regime wird der IAEA auch bei der zweiten Urananreicherungsanlage, die sich bei Ghom (Absicht?) befinden soll, alle möglichen Knüppel zwischen die Beine werfen, ganz abgesehen davon, dass die UN-Behörde bisher dank ihres ehemaligen Chefs eher zur Inspektionsverhinderungsinstitution taugte denn zur Aufklärungsinstanz. Oder wie lässt sich erklären, dass El-Baradei von der neuen Anlage „nichts wusste“?

Iran to allow IAEA inspectors into new uranium plant

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran said on Saturday it would allow UN inspectors into its newly disclosed uranium enrichment plant, as US President Barack Obama led a global outcry against Tehran for building the facility.

„As the president (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) said, we have no problem for inspection within the framework of the agency (International Atomic Energy Agency) regulations,“ Ali Akbar Salehi, Iran’s atomic energy chief, said on state television.

„We will pursue this case with the agency and the date of the visit will be announced after we reach an agreement with the IAEA.“

He said the new plant was on the road between Tehran and the holy city of Qom — the first official disclosure of its location.

Iran to Switch Reserve Currency from Dollar to Euro

Weblog History Commens — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad orders that his country’s foreign exchange reserves be moved from the dollar to the euro, setting the stage for the Iranian Central Bank to cut its foreign currency reserve interests rates from 12 percent to 5 percent. The estimated rate cut makes it cheaper for the bank to acquire foreign currency. “They have been talking about switching their foreign currency reserve from the dollar to the euro for a while now, but it makes them more dependent on the euro and the European Union,” says Dr. Ali Ansari, director of Scotland’s St. Andrews University Iranian Studies Centre.

Followed Call Addressed to OPEC – Ahmadinejad’s decision comes shortly after he called for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to discard the dollar as the currency standard for oil-related deals. Despite recent declines in dollar value and the fact that most major oil producing countries are outside the US, the dollar remains the prevailing currency for pricing a barrel of oil. The dollar also remains the most frequently used international trade currency.

Possible Motivation – Some analysts believe that exchanging the dollar for the euro may be Iran’s attempt to lessen the effects of US economic sanctions in force since the 1979 Islamic revolution when the US backed the overthrown Shah of Iran, who was replaced by an Islamic republic. US sanctions include prohibiting US involvement with Iran’s petroleum development, as well as prohibiting all trade and investment activities by US citizens around the globe. Sanctions were softened somewhat in 2000, when the US Treasury amended its prohibition edict by allowing US citizens to buy and import carpets and food products like dried fruits, nuts, and caviar produced in Iran. Recent media reports suggest, however, that President Obama is considering an increase in sanctions if Iran persists in its alleged development of nuclear weapons. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is solely for power production.

Spiegel Online, Moskau — Die europäischen Staaten wollen sich mit dem Mammut-Projekt emanzipieren und weniger abhängig von Russland machen: Eine riesige Pipeline soll die EU mit asiatischem Gas versorgen, Nabucco heißt das Projekt.

Aber so einfach ist das alles nicht, findet Altbundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder. Er halte das nur machbar mit Gas aus dem Iran, sagte er. Es gebe bislang ausreichend Gas für die geplanten Leitungen Nord Stream und South Stream, nicht aber für Nabucco, sagte Schröder nach Angaben russischer Agenturen. Alle drei Vorhaben hätten ihre Berechtigung, weil Europa immer mehr Gas benötige. Allerdings müsse die EU ihre politischen Differenzen mit dem Iran überwinden, um eine Vereinbarung über Gaslieferungen vom Kaspischen Meer zu treffen.

Schröder ist Vorsitzender des Aktionärsausschusses der europäisch-russischen Nord Stream AG. Er hatte wie der mit ihm befreundete russische Regierungschef  Wladimir Putin betont, dass Nabucco keine Konkurrenz für die anderen Gasleitungen sei. Allerdings hatten auch Putin und Kremlchef Dmitri Medwedew gesagt, dass unklar sei, woher das Gas für Nabucco kommen solle.

BROAD – PITTSBURGH — President Obama and his allies raced Friday to use their revelation of a secret Iranian nuclear enrichment plant as long-sought leverage against Tehran, demanding that the country allow highly intrusive international inspections and propelling the confrontation with Tehran to a new and volatile pitch. 

In a day of high drama at an economic summit meeting, American, British and French officials declassified some of their most closely held intelligence and scrambled to describe a multiyear Iranian effort, tracked by spies on the ground and satellites above, to build a secret uranium enrichment plant deep inside a mountain.

The new plant, which Iran strongly denied was intended to be kept secret or used for making weapons, is months away from completion and does nothing to shorten intelligence estimates of how long it would take Iran to produce a bomb. American intelligence officials say it will take at least a year, perhaps five, for Iran to develop the full ability to make a nuclear weapon.

But the finding so cemented a sense of what Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain called “the serial deception of many years” that it led to a rare Russian rebuke of Iran, and a milder warning from China, two countries crucial to Mr. Obama’s efforts to back up diplomacy with far tougher sanctions.

Mr. Obama’s aides and a raft of intelligence officials argued that the small, hidden plant was unsuitable for producing reactor fuel that might be used in a peaceful nuclear program. Moreover, its location, deep inside an Iranian Revolutionary Guards base about 20 miles from the religious center of Qum, strongly suggested it was designed for covert use in weapons, they said.

An Iran that is not at peace with itself cannot make peace with outsiders, let alone foreign powers cast in the role of evildoers and enemies.

It is a safe bet that even if last June’s elections had produced a different result we would still have witnessed a crisis within the present state structures.

For those familiar with Iran‘s history this will not be a surprise.

This is not the first time that Iranian society has outgrown the political system that has defined it for more than a generation. It is as if the frame in which a painting is nested could no longer contain it.

This is what happened in 1905-06, when a resurgent Iranian society broke out of the limits imposed by a traditional system of absolutism.

Something similar happened in 1921 because state structures could no longer respond to new hopes, fears and aspirations.

The revolution of 1979, leading to the creation of the Islamic Republic, followed a similar pattern. A vibrant, recently urbanized society had to break out of constraints imposed by a political system that refused to change.

When the form is in conflict with the content, the result is tension, conflict and, at times, violent revolution.

Man sollte den Sitz dieser Organisation nach Teheran oder gerne auch nach Venezuela verschieben, also dahin, wo die Psychopathen und Fanatiker herrschen, die Millionen Menschen unterdrücken und ermorden lassen.

Die ersten Tage der neuen UNO-Generalversammlung waren im besten Fall ein überflüssiges Medienspektakel. Im schlimmeren Fall wurde die Lösung der wichtigsten globalen Probleme und regionalen Konflikte noch zusätzlich erschwert.

US-Präsident Obamas Werben um multilaterale Anstrengungen und seine Absage an eine Führungsrolle der USA klang zwar erfreulich angesichts der schlechten Erfahrungen mit der unilateralen und UNO-feindlichen Politik der Bush-Administration, doch Charisma allein genügt nicht.

Eine konstruktive Führungsrolle der USA wird von vielen UNO-Mitgliedern nämlich durchaus gewünscht. Vor allem bei Konflikten wie jenem im Nahen Osten, wo Washington über die Instrumente für die Herbeiführung einer Lösung verfügt. Und bei globalen Herausforderungen, wo die USA wie bislang beim Klimawandel der größte Teil des Problems sind.

Irans Präsident Ahmadinedschad trat in New York zum wiederholten Mal wie ein Agent des Mossad auf. Mit seinen antiisraelischen Tiraden unterstützte er Premierminister Netanjahus Strategie, unter Verweis auf die „iranische Bedrohung“ vom israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt abzulenken. Zugleich stärkt Ahmadinedschad die Hardliner in Washington, die Obama eine zu weiche Haltung im Streit über das iranische Atomprogramm vorwerfen. Damit ist die Gefahr größer geworden, dass der Konflikt mit Teheran militärisch eskaliert.

Libyens Staatschef Gaddafi findet mit seiner Forderung der Abschaffung des Vetorechts sowie der Demokratisierung des Sicherheitsrats durchaus mehrheitliche Unterstützung unter den 192 UNO-Staaten. Doch auch seine Unterstützer stieß Gaddafi vor den Kopf mit der Bezeichnung des Rats als „Terrorrat“ und dem Zerreißen der UNO-Charta.

„Präsident“ Mahmud Ahmadinedschad hat mit dieser  aggressiven und teilweise deliranten Rede gezeigt, dass er weiter entschlossen ist , die  Bühne der Vereinten Nationen zu nutzen, um gegen die tragenden Staaten des Westens zu polemisieren und eine antiamerikanische und antiisraelische Front zu schmieden. Ahmadinedschad hat wirkungsvoll bewiesen, dass er eine Gefahr für die Welt war und ist. Da helfen nur noch schärfste Sanktionen und internationale Strafverfolgung.
