The Kurds, June Pres Elections and the Aftermath

Well before the presidential elections for the tenth president in Iran, on June 12, 2009, the issue of participating or not in the elections was a hot question among the Kurds leading to debates and discussion among their political and social circles. These discussions grew in intensity after candidate Mehdi Karoubi issued a statement on the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, and candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s green light regarding the importance of the participation of “ethnic groups,” along with his references to this in his talks, and also the presentation of a plan to Iran’s Supreme Cultural Revolution Council proposing that native local languages be used in schools as the instruction media, which was attributed to Mr. Ahmadinejad’s campaign activities. The question at the time of course was why were the presidential candidates, who did not have very good relations with the ethnic groups and particularly the Kurds, suddenly focusing on them and stressing their rights and also the implementation of constitutional provisions in this regard that had not been implemented.

European Students Union: Boykottiert Iran!

Viel zu selten hört man Stimmen der Solidarität mit den iranischen Freiheitskämpfern aus der europäischen Zivilgesellschaft. Folgende Stellungnahme der European Students Union ist  eine erfreuliche Ausnahme  (hier der ganze Text):

Please show solidarity with the people of Iran. One way to do this is by asking the governments of Europe, your local council, community organizations, human rights groups, educational institutions, student organizations and other members of our democratic civil society to play a more involved role in supporting the democratic grassroots movement. In light of the scale of the recent atrocities and the continuous pleas of the people we argue that:

1)    Governments must not remain silent about human rights abuses and should discontinue diplomatic and economic relations with the Iranian regime.

2)    Human rights groups and community organizations need to take a more active role in pressuring the Iranian regime to respect human rights.

3)    Academics from all disciplines must recognize the fact that their voices are among the most important and influential and that their peers in Iran desperately need their solidarity.

4)    Student organizations of all kinds need to prepare activities which will raise awareness of the plight of their fellow students in Iran and assist them in realizing their goal of a free and democratic Iran.

Hoffentlich wachen endlich auch andere Studentenvereinigungen, Gewerkschaften und Menschenrechtsorganisationen auf!

Der virtuelle Iran ist frei

Nazila Fathi arbeitete lange als Journalistin in Iran. Sie beschreibt in einem spannenden Artikel in der New York Times wie sie die Proteste im Juni letzten Jahres erlebt hat und warum sie sich schweren Herzens für die Flucht nach Kanada entschied. Ihrer Ansicht nach eröffnen moderne Kommunikationstechnologien der Opposition in Iran und im Ausland Möglichkeiten der Vernetzung und des Informationsaustauschs, die sich dem Zugriff des Regimes bis heute erfolgreich entziehen.

For me, that was like a new dawn: rather than being cut off, I had made contact with another Iran — a virtual one on the Internet, linking reformers abroad to bloggers and demonstrators still inside the country, and to reporters and sources outside. In fact, by following blogs and the cellphone videos seeping out of Iran, in some ways I could report more productively than when I had to fear and outwit the government. For example, my contacts helped me find and interview a young man who had left Iran after being in prison, where he said a guard had raped him. That interview could not have happened in Iran. Last month, I could freely translate the harsh slogans that protestors hurled about the supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. There were palpably genuine videos on YouTube from places I recognized, with crowds chanting slogans I knew — or new ones.

Vertreter der fünf ständigen Mitglieder des UN-Sicherheitsrats und Deutschlands haben am Samstag in New York über das weitere Vorgehen im Atomstreit mit dem Iran beraten. Neue Sanktionen gegen Teheran seien nicht beschlossen worden, sagte der stellvertretende russische Außenminister Sergej Ryabkow nach den mehr als zweistündigen Beratungen der Sechsergruppe in der EU-Vertretung am Sitz der Vereinten Nationen. Solidarität? Fehlanzeige

Was machen die großen Vorbilder und Sprecher der Unterdrückten dieser Welt, wenn eines der ärmsten Länder von einer so fürchterlichen Kapatstrophe heimgesucht wird, wie jetzt Haiti? Nichts! Oder sie senden 30 Tonnen Nahrung. Das reicht, einen Haitianer bis zu seinem Lebensende mit Nahrung zu versorgen.

Riskante Wirtschaftspolitik

Der Iran gibt fast 30 Prozent seines jährlichen Budgets für Preissubventionierungen aus. Diese Woche haben die Machthaber in Teheran das Ende dieser Politik beschlossen, um so den Staathaushalt zu entlasten:

The Guardians Council on January 13 approved President Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s “Economic Reform Plan” intended to allow the prices of now-subsidized goods to reach normal market prices over the course of the next three to four years. (…) The approval comes just a week after the Iranian parliament, the Majlis, ratified the bill after much controversy over how the government will carry out the changes.Through the cuts, Ahmadinejad hopes to save some $100 billion now spent to control the prices of petroleum products, electricity, water, wheat, milk, rice, and fertilizer, to name just some of the goods.

Ahmadineschad begründet seinen Vorstoß mit sozialpolitischen Argumenten und betont, dass die freiwerdenden Mittel zur Armutsbekämpfung eingesetzt werden sollen. Der Bedarf ist da, denn Dank der korrupten Kommandowirtschaft der Mullahs lebt knapp ein Drittel der Iraner unter der Armutsgrenze. Einen erkleklichen Anteil an den zu erwartenden Einsparungen hat er sich allerdings bereits zu freien Verfügung zusichern lassen.  Ob eine Kürzung der Subventionen so einfach implemetiert werden kann ist jedoch fraglich:

“Iran-Freedom 2.0 will be over”

Das meint aber auch nur Chief-Folterer Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam.

Nichtsdestotrotz: Noch mehr Sorgfalt im Umgang mit Daten ist angeraten!

Und eine Frage noch an alle Befürworter von Islamische Republik Light unter Mussawi, Karrubi & Co:  Würden diese Herrschaften freie Medien zulassen?

Iran Warns Protesters Era of ‘Mercy’ Is Over

SANA, Yemen — Iran’s national police chief issued a stark warning to the country’s opposition on Friday, saying that the era of “mercy” was over and that the authorities would begin cracking down more harshly not only on street protests but also on anyone who used cellphones and e-mail messages to publicize them.

The opposition has relied heavily on e-mail, cellphones and the Internet to organize protests ever since the disputed June 12 presidential election, which set off the worst domestic unrest in decades. The government has shut down opposition newspapers and blocked Web sites, and has grown increasingly frustrated with the protesters’ continuing ability to elude its restraints.

Editorial - With his new statement Mousavi is taking two steps back. If Mousavi’s (new) preoccupation is how to join the ranks of the ruling government, then like his Afghan counterpart Abdullah Abdullah he will have to swallow his objections to the fraudulent way it came to power, and wait a few years until the next “election” comes around.

In the first days of the year Mousavi released a statement, described as a working plan to end Iran’s current deep political crisis. He makes no mention however of the demands of Iranian women, nor does he offer any tangible way of improving the lives of millions of destitute Iranians.

Ein iranischer Schauprozess

Wahied Wahdat-Hagh in der Welt zum geplanten Justizmord an sieben Bahai:

Ein Richter las die Anklagepunkte vor und fragte Herrn Jamoldin Khanjani, einen der Angeklagten, ob er den Anklagepunkten zustimme. Dieser wies alle Punkte entschieden zurck. Der Richter fragte ihn, ob er zu seiner Verteidigung etwas sagen wolle. Herr Khanjani wies wiederum auf seinen Anwalt hin. Der Anwalt bekam aber keine Redeerlaubnis. Er sah seine Klienten zum ersten Mal im Gerichtssaal. Der Prozess wurde wahrscheinlich auf den 7. Feruar verschoben. Erwartet werden Todesurteile für unschuldige Menschen, die lediglich einen anderen Glauben haben als die Machthaber der totalitären Diktatur.

Amnesty ruft zu einer Urgent Action für die Angeklagten auf.

Irans Polizeichef Ismail Moghaddam droht Oppositionellen mit der Macht des Überwachungsstaates:

„These people must know when they send the SMS messages or e-mails out, these systems are completely under (our) control,“ Moghaddam was quoted as saying by the semiofficial ISNA news agency. „These individuals should not assume … they can hide their identities. That is a wishful thinking.“ Moghaddam added that those who continue to use cell phones and e-mails in service of the opposition would be punished. „Those involved in organizing or issuing appeals have committed a worse crime than those who take to the streets,“ he said.

Die iranische Kontrollapparat ist zu großen Teilen Made in Germany. Überhaupt lässt Siemens keine Gelegenheit zu guten Geschäften mit den Staatsterroristen in Teheran aus.

Noch ein Diplomat wirft das Handtuch

Wenn Diplomaten das Handtuch werfen, dann steht es um das jeweilige Regime nicht gut. Nun hat auch ein Vertreter Irans in Norwegen seinen Job an den Nagel gehängt und seinem Unmut mit dem Regime in einem Interview Ausdruck verliehen:

Mohammad-Reza Heidari: “In the past 7 months, I kept fighting myself asking why should these events happen in my country. What do my people want? [besides freedom]. And on Dec. 27th, holy religious day, the blood of my compatriots was spilled only because they were asking for freedom and for what’s called a democracy in the western world. After that I could not face my conscious watching these scenes. I then announced that I was resigning from my position so that people realize that we are moving in their direction.”

China to send lower-level envoy to talks on Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – China has decided to send a lower-level official to talks among major powers in New York on Saturday about possibly imposing new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programs, the U.S. State Department said on Thursday.

The development caused some consternation among others in the group, which includes Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany, and several diplomats said China had proposed New York as the venue for the meeting.

Iran is facing mounting international protests about its jamming of the BBC’s Persian TV service (PTV) after the channel – which has millions of viewers and is hugely popular with opposition supporters – was taken off a satellite owned by Europe’s leading operator. The BBC said today it was “actively supporting” a formal complaint to the International Telecommunication Union, a UN-affiliated body, about “deliberate interference” from Iran. The ITU confirmed it had received representations from regulators in France, home to Eutelsat, owner of the Hotbird 6 satellite, which suspended PTV’s transmissions last month.

Khameinis Autorität schwindet und schwindet

Nir Boms und Shayan Arya berichten für The Australian, dass Khameinis ohnehin bisweilen offen hinterfragter religiöser Führungsanspruch mehr und mehr an Legitimität unter führenden Ajatollahs im Iran verliert:

Khomeini’s successor Ali Khamenei never enjoyed the religious and moral authority of his predecessor. Khamenei, a mid-level cleric (hojatoleslam) who had never completed a resaleye amalie (equivalent to a PhD dissertation for Shia religious students), ascended to the rank of grand ayatollah within three months. He began his career by putting his rival, grand ayatollah Hosein Ali Montazeri, under house arrest. [...]

The rift between the clerical establishment and the regime has significantly widened during the past six months. Slowly but surely, even some of the most conservative ayatollahs began to distance themselves from both. [...]

[I]t is becoming increasingly evident that the moral authority of the Supreme Leader is fading. With it, the very foundation on which the Islamic Republic was built appears shakier than ever. The Iranian people, along with the religious leadership, are distancing themselves from a regime that represents neither the people below nor God above.

Abschied, Demo

Hunderte von Iranische Oppositionelle haben am Donnerstag Abschied von dem regierungskritischen Atomwissenschaftler genommen, der bei einem Bombenanschlag in Teheran ermordet wurde. Die Hälfte der rund 1000 Trauergäste seien Anhänger der Opposition gewesen, erklärten Augenzeugen.

Man ahnt: da wollte ein Propagandaschreiber vom Dienst mal vorwitzig sein; oder eine Urangst verarbeiten; oder gar subversiv sein. Oder die Geschichte stimmt.

Jahan News, a pro-government hardliner website, claims that during recent crack down of reformist demonstrators, a woman trained in martial arts has injured chief of Tehran military police. The story is provided as a proof of mild manners by Iranian police but it has not been independently confirmed.

Und wenn gar nichts mehr geht…

Wenn  einem daheim die Leute nicht mehr zuhören, sondern Steine an den Kopf werfen wollen, wenn man völlig diskreditiert ist, politisch, moralisch, ökonomisch, wenn alles auseinanderfällt, das ganze schöne Machtgefüge, in dem man sich eingerichtet hatte, wenn man nurmehr auf Abruf dasitzt, ja dann hat man Krisenstimmung.

Dann möchte man am liebsten Krieg führen. So zur Ablenkung. Jedenfalls ein bißchen Krise inszenieren. Mal wieder starke Worte von sich selber lesen. Und nicht immer nur die Meldungen über Demonstrationen, die gegen einen  gerichtet sind. Die Überschriften der jüngsten Press TV-Meldungen, oder was das Regime gerade umtreibt:

Trotz Zensur und Störmanövern des Regimes findet die iranische Opposition neue Wege, um ihre Botschaften unters Volk zu bringen. Ausgerechnet auf Banknoten wird zu neuen Demonstrationen am 11. Februar aufgerufen.
