The United States now faces a critical choice. If it continues its withdrawal of forces from Iraq, Iraq will be on its way to becoming an Iranian satellite. Certainly, there are anti-Iranian elements even among the Shiites, but the covert capability of Iran and its overt influence, coupled with its military presence on the border, will undermine Iraq’s ability to resist. If Iraq becomes an Iranian ally or satellite, the Iraqi-Saudi and Iraqi-Kuwaiti frontier becomes, effectively, the frontier with Iran. The psychological sense in the region will be that the United States has no appetite for resisting Iran. Having asked the Americans to deal with the Iranians — and having failed to get them to do so, the Saudis will have to reach some accommodation with Iran. In other words, with the most strategically located country in the Middle East — Iraq — Iran now has the ability to become the dominant power in the Middle East and simultaneously reshape the politics of the Arabian Peninsula.

The United States, of course, has the option of not drawing down forces in Iraq or stopping the withdrawal at some smaller number, but we are talking here about war and not symbols. Twenty thousand U.S. troops (as the drawdown continues) deployed in training and support roles and resisting an assertive pro-Iranian militia is a small number. Indeed, the various militias will have no compunction about attacking U.S. troops, diplomats and aid workers dispersed at times in small groups around the country. The United States couldn’t control Iraq with nearly 170,000 troops, and 50,000 troops or fewer is going to result in U.S. casualties should the Iranians choose to follow that path. And these causalities would not be accompanied by hope of a military or political success. Die iranische Gottesdiktatur muss sich entschuldigen und nicht der Axel-Springer-Verlag

Eine Stellungnahme von Mina Ahadi aus aktuellem Anlass

Die Beweislage ist ebenso umfassend wie eindeutig: Die Islamische Republik Iran ist seit ihrer Gründung ein totalitärer Unrechtsstaat, in dem die elementarsten Grund- und Menschenrechte systematisch verletzt werden. Während weder Meinungs-, Koalitions- und Versammlungsfreiheit noch das Recht auf individuelle Selbstbestimmung existieren, werden nichtangepasste, freiheitsliebende und oppositionelle Kräfte auf vielfältige Art unterdrückt, eingeschüchtert, massakriert, gefoltert und hingerichtet. Allein in den letzten Wochen wurden zahlreiche Todesstrafen gegen Regimegegner vollstreckt und entwürdigende Strafen vorgenommen.

Nur nicht reizen!

Erschreckend, in welchem Maße nicht nur die „Junge Welt“, sondern auch die „Süddeutsche“ der iranischen Diktatur huldigt:

„Irgendwann wird sich der Springer-Aufsichtsrat bei Iran entschuldigen müssen“, schnaubt da ein Stefan Kornelius angesichts der Anzeigenkampagne von Verlegern und Journalistenverbänden für Marcus Hellwig und Jens Koch. Die, so Kornelius, werde „eher zu einer Verhärtung der Lage führen“. Jedenfalls seien die beiden selbst schuld, ihr Interview sei eine „Dummheit“ gewesen. Man recherchiert als seriöser Journalist schließlich nicht in einem „Polizeistaat“ (und wenn doch, dann nur mit formeller staatlicher Akkreditierung und Geheimdienstbegleitung, ist doch klar).

Kornelius’ ganze Sorge gilt nicht den Geiseln, sondern den Geiselnehmern und ihrem drohenden Gesichtsverlust. Dass die „Inhaftierten“ „Opfer der iranischen Zensur“ seien, nennt er eine „Lesart“ (sic!). Darf man die Redaktion der „Süddeutschen“ mal nach ihrer Lesart fragen??

Und nebenbei: Wo sind sie denn, die großen Erfolge der „stillen Diplomatie“, die Berlin doch in diesem Fall schon seit Monaten praktiziert? Nein, diese ach so klugen Diplomaten haben in Wahrheit ganz grundsätzlich ein Problem damit, Gesicht zu zeigen und für Recht und Freiheit einzustehen. So einfach ist das.

Because of the delay, U.S. officials see what one describes as „a little bit of space“ before any military showdown with Iran. What’s increasingly clear is that low-key weapons – covert sabotage and economic sanctions – are accomplishing many of the benefits of military action, without the costs. The most direct confirmation that sabotage has paid off came from Iranian President Ahmadinejad, who said in November that the Stuxnet computer virus had damaged the Natanz operation

In an atrocious act on Saturday, January 8th, the inhumane clerical regime hanged 4 prisoners together in the Esfahan Prison. A day before, 2 prisoners were hanged in Boroujerd Prison, west of Iran. Therefore, the total number of executions in the past 20 days has reached 46. The number of executions in the first eight days of 2011 is 20. These executions include, 16 prisoners in Zahedan, 8 in Qom, 7 in Kermanshah, 4 in Esfahan, 3 in Tehran, 2 in Saveh and 2 other in Boroujerd. Almost half of the prisoners executed were charged with moharebeh (waging war against God). During this time period, dozens of barbaric execution sentences were issued to prisoners in cities across the country.

Endlich! Iranischer Terror mit menschlicherem Antlitz

Seien wir ehrlich! Ein Fortschritt! Allein Frisur- und barttechnisch – oh ja. Der Mann sieht nicht zwangsläufig nach Funktionsträger der „Islamischen Republik Iran “ aus.  Nein, wirkt er im Gegenteil nicht sogar sympathisch und menschlich?

Der Mann heißt Ali Akbar Salehi und ist so etwas wie der geschäftsführende Außenminister der „Islamischen Republik Iran“. Viele nennen ihn im Sinne Ahmedinejads schon mal Außenminister, gerade die deutschen Medien, obwohl er „vom Parlament“, dem „Majilis“  noch nicht bestätigt ist. Und das mag angesichts der internen Zerwürfnisse innherhalb des Regimes ja auch noch dauern.

Ali Akbar Salehi ist im Übrigen ein sehr kulanter Funktionär der „Islamischen Republik“. Nur ein bißchen Kotau vor dem Iran und alles wird gut. Der Springer Verlag fängt an und dann am besten reihum und dann dürfen womöglich sogar die deutschen Geiseln  nach Hause.

Political Prisoners Jafar Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Aghai to be executed Tuesday Jan. 11th

According to reports received, “Human Rights and Democracy in Iran” the  Iranian regime is planning the executions of political prisoners Jafar Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Aghai on Tuesday, the 11th of January .
At this time, the signs and evidence surrounding the case point to the date of the 11th of January as the date for implementation of their sentences.
Mr. Kazemi’s family was informed last week that the case of Jafar Kazemi has been referred to the execution branch of the Revolutionary Court and is awaiting confirmation. The family inquired about the sentencing and tried to meet with Tehran prosecutor Abbas Abbas Jaffar Dowlatabadi, but Dowlatabadi has continually refused to meet with the family face to face, and each day that the family has inquired about their loved one they are told to return another day.

Klinkenputzen in Teheran

Der Iran verkündet frohgemut und lauthals einen neuen Höhepunkt der stillen Diplomatie Deutschlands und man nennt auch gleich einen Preis für mögliches Entgegenkommen in Sachen der beiden Staatsgeiseln: Deutschland soll sich weiterhin gegenüber der Islamischen Republik Iran willfährig zeigen.

The issue was raised by Erbel [Bernd E., deutscher Botschafter in Teheran] in a meeting with Head of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi here in Tehran today.
Erbel pointed to Iran’s permission for a meeting between the families of the detained German nationals and their loved ones, and said, „The Islamic Republic of Iran’s goodwill in such moves signifies that expansion of cooperation and removing the misunderstandings are highly important.“
He also underlined the key role of diplomatic efforts to expand bilateral ties between the two sides, and stressed that he would spare no effort to expand Tehran-Berlin relations.

Boroujerdi, for his part, said that his commission welcomes any political, economic and cultural move to boost the two countries’ ties.
The lawmaker also called on the German official to resist the pressures exerted by certain foreign states – an allusion to the US and Israel – to shanghai Berlin into narrowing down its relations with Iran.

Erneuter Angriff auf Camp Ashraf

Gestern kam es anscheinend – wohl auch durch irakische Sicherheitskräfte – zu einem erneuten Angriff auf das hauptsächlich von MEK-Kräften bewohnte Camp Ashraf im Ostirak. Nach Angaben des MEK-Sprachrohrs NCR wurden bei dem Angriff Molotov-Cocktails benutzt, was zu über 150 Verletzten führte.

Möge er Recht haben

Meir Dagan, who retired from his post as Mossad chief on Thursday after eight years, does not believe Iran will have nuclear capability before 2015.
He told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that a series of failures had set its nuclear weapons program back by several years.

Hilft Deutschland wieder?

Nachdem Deutschland gerade schon geholfen hat – der Vorschlag eines indisch-iranischen Ölabrechnungsdeals über die Europäisch-Iranische Handelsbank ist jetzt auch von iranischer Seite bestätigt worden – könnte Deutschland schon wieder helfen. Aber langsam sollte doch wohl ein längerer Freigang für die beiden Staatsgeiseln Jens Koch und Marcus Hellwig drinnen sein?

Jedenfalls hat der Iran im Rahmen der jüngsten Verhandlungen über sein Atomprogramm Einladungen verschickt; interessierte Gesandte bei der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde sollen die atomaren Harmlosigkeiten der „Islamischen Republik Iran“ besichtigen können. Ein Täßchen Tee auf den – leeren – Hüllen der iranischen Bombe sozusagen. Alle interessierten Gesandten? Oh nein. Es gibt schließlich gute und böse Länder. Und jetzt raten wir:

“Spiteful states, including the US and certain European countries, will never be invited to Iran to inspect the country’s nuclear facilities,” Avaz Heidarpour, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) told IRNA on Thursday. [...] The remarks came after Iran’s envoy to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh said on Tuesday that some ambassadors to the Vienna-based agency would tour Iranian nuclear sites soon. He noted that the decision would also disgrace certain countries, including the US, France and Britain, seek to “slow down the pace of talks.” [...] “The plan [invitation] is in line with the Islamic Republic’s transparent nuclear policy,” Soltanieh added.

Sonnenklar! Mhm, wer aus der zentralen 5 plus 1 Gruppe könnte eingeladen worden sein? Mhmmm. China ist eingeladen worden. Die USA, England und Frankreich also nicht. Rußland ist auch eingeladen worden, da bleibt also nur … Deutschland. Na da sind wir aber auf die Antwort aus Berlin gespannt.

Mhmmmm. Und wer sonst noch aus Europa? Ungarn. Aha, da kann man sich auch gleich über Mediengesetzgebung unterhalten. Und der Rest:  Cuba ist eingeladen! Und Nordkorea, Simbawe oder Venezuela?

UPDATE: Russland und China verweigern sich tatsächlich der Propagandashow. Teilnehmen werden: Egypt, Cuba, Syria, Algeria and Venezuela. Und man glaubt es kaum: die Deutschen wurden doch nicht eingeladen.

Die Islamisierung des Libanon

The recent rise in Iranian purchases of property owned by Christians stirred controversy in Lebanon as the Islamic republic is accused of dividing the country along sectarian lines and embarking on a Shiite infiltration scheme.
The Shiite purchase of Christian land in Lebanon drove Lebanese Labor Minister Botros Harb to submit to the cabinet a draft law that prohibits the sale of land across religions.
Harb’s proposal mirror Lebanese fears of a scheme that enables Iran of exercising growing economic influence in Lebanon through Shiite businessmen who buy lands and houses owned by Christians and take advantage of Lebanon’s free market economy.
The draft law, of which AlArabiya.net obtained a copy, consists of six articles and an explanation of the way in which they are not in violation of the Lebanese constitution.

Das nächste Todesurteil

Zahra Bahrami, an Iranian-Dutch citizen who was arrested in the wake of the Ashura (December 27, 2009) massive popular protests has been sentenced to death.

Zhinous Sharif Razi, Zahra Bahrami’s lawyer confirmed the news and told CHRR, “My client’s case was being investigated in two parts. The first part concerns the 2009 Ashura events. No trial has been held regarding the [Ashura] charges, so naturally no sentence has been issued [either]. However, the death sentence concerns the second part of the case against Zahra Bahrami that involves the possession of narcotics. More than 30 grams of drugs were discovered in my client’s home after it was searched. According to the law, possession of more than 30 grams of [certain] drugs is punishable by death. The court has sentenced her to death on this charge.”

Irrtümer vom schlimmsten Kaliber

Die konkret, für die mal Autoren wie Eike Geisel und Wolfgang Pohrt geschrieben haben, bietet heute jemandem wie der Lukrezia Jochimsen seitenlang die Möglichkeit, ihre geistigen Ergüsse abszusondern und am Ende das Interview auch noch stolz unter’s Irantagebuch auf ihre Seite zu stellen. Das läuft heutzutage unter Gremlizas Gespräche und man ist leider bei der Lektüre hin- und hergerissen, ob nun Frager oder Antworterin debiler sind, wie sie da nett über Folter und ihre linke Szenevergangenheit plaudern, während die MdB  zwischendurch mal Steinigungen zur Eigenart der iranischen Kultur erklärt.

Darüber zu reden, was uns im Iran nicht paßt und was den Mullahs in Deutschland nicht paßt, ist auf eine schlimme Art relativistisch. Was dem Iran vorgeworfen wird, sind doch nicht Karikaturen von George Bush oder einem anderen christlichen Propheten, sondern daß dort Frauen, Homosexuelle, Regimekritiker gesteinigt oder aufgehängt werden.

Dann brauchen wir überhaupt nicht mehr mit Menschen oder Politikern in anderen Ländern reden. Ich habe als junges Mädchen gedacht, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und der Hitler-Diktatur werde sich die Welt humanisieren. Jetzt, dachte ich, gibt es noch Staaten, in denen die Todesstrafe gilt, aber es werden weniger. Die Todesstrafe wird abgeschafft. Ich war auch der Überzeugung, Folter würde nicht mehr angewandt. Das war ein Irrtum vom schlimmsten Kaliber.

Demnächst noch mehr Zucht und Ordnung

Die notorische „Kulturwissenschaftlerin“ Christina von Braun vor kurzem im Zeit-Interview: Einer der Slogans der Frauenbewegung war Virginia Woolfs Forderung: “Ein Zimmer für sich allein”. Vielleicht ist das Kopftuch eine Art, sich diesen Raum in einer fremden Öffentlichkeit zu verschaffen. Und wenn die Menschen in die Zwangsjacke ihrer doch angeblich so autochthonen Kultur einfach nicht hineinwollen – dann muß man eben nachhelfen.

Den Druck erhöhen!

Jamsheed Faroughi in der Deutschen Welle:

Um die internationale Kritik unglaubwürdig erscheinen zu lassen, entdeckt die iranische Propagandamaschine diesmal die unglückliche Sakineh Aschtiani, die aus Angst um ihr Leben und ihren Sohn zu allem bereit ist. Von diesem Manöver darf man sich nicht täuschen lassen. Die Proteste zeigen offenbar Wirkung. Die Vollstreckung einiger Todesurteile wurde verhindert. Selbst die Hinrichtung von Sakineh Aschtiani wurde dank weltweiter Proteste verschoben.

Die Bemühungen um Freilassung der beiden deutschen Reporter sind richtig und gut, aber ohne massiven Druck auf Teheran werden sie erfolglos bleiben. Einen anderen Weg zur Bekämpfung massiver Menschenrechtsverletzungen im Iran gibt es nicht.

An End to ‘Critical Dialogue’ with Iran?

Europe in general and Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in particular have traditionally pursued a dual strategy of “critical dialogue” and “change through trade” in their efforts to influence the Iranian regime. The ongoing German hostage crisis is yet another example of what a flop this cognitive-behavioral therapy for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and company has been.

German journalists Marcus Hellwig and Jens Koch, who were arrested in mid-October for interviewing family members of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani — a woman sentenced to death by stoning for alleged adultery — have spent 86 days incarcerated in a prison located in the city of Tabriz.

This comes after Iran, perhaps sensing President Obama’s extended hand as sign of feebleness, created in July 2009 a second American hostage crisis (replicating the 1979 model), seizing three United States citizens, Sarah Shourd, Shane M. Bauer and Joshua F. Fattal, for simply hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan, situated near Iran’s border. (Shourd has since been released.) America’s reliance on Swiss diplomacy — their foreign ministry represents U.S. interests in Iran — has produced lackluster results. The Swiss are considered to be the most pro-Iranian European country, largely because of their massive economic interests in Iran.

Deutschland hilft!

Die „Islamische Republik Iran“ hat gerade ein kleines Problem mit der Abrechnung ihrer Ölexporte nach Indien. Die Iraner sind wegen der Sanktionen nämlich gerade aus dem innerasiatischen Abrechnungsverkehr geflogen. Aber da gibt es eine Bank in Hamburg, die gehört dem Iran, und die darf ihren Geschäften trotz amerikanischen Drucks ungehindert nachgehen. Die „Europäisch-Iranische Handelsbank“ wird den Zahlungsverkehr des iranisch-indischen Ölgeschäfts also zumindest kurzfristig abwicklen.

Aber wo Deutschland doch so hilft, wäre da nicht zumindest wieder ein Freigang für die beiden deutschen Staatsgeiseln drinnen? Oder wofür geben Sie sich denn eigentlich so viel Mühe, der „Islamischen Republik Iran“ ihre Restexistenz ein wenig zu erleichtern? Wohl kaum aus Idealismus. Also vielleicht wegen der Mittelständler im Maschinenbau? Ist das wirklich alles, was sie in Berlin als  Staatsraison noch zu definieren vermögen?

In a temporary reprieve, India will pay for the Iranian crude oil in euro through a German bank based in Hamburgh and a permanent solution to the payment issue will be explored at a meeting in Tehran next week.

Iran’s national oil company NIOC (National Iranion Oil Company) has a euro account in Europisch-Iranische Handelsbank AG (EIH Bank) in Hamburg, which will process the payments made for Iranian crude by Indian companies.

Oil companies like MRPL, Indian Oil and Essar Oil will make payments to State Bank of India (SBI), whose Frankfurt branch will transfer the money to NIOC’s EIH Bank account in Hamburg.

Ohrfeige für Ahmadinejad

Was wohl nicht wenige Iraner gerne tun würden, hat Wikileaks zufolge der Kommandeur der Pasdaran, General Mohammed Ali Jafari, getan:

The Iranian bigs were trying to figure out what to do in the wake of Tehran’s explosive pro-democracy street protests of 2009.
„Ahmadinejad claimed that ‘people feel suffocated,’ and mused that to defuse the situation it may be necessary to allow more personal and social freedoms, including more freedom of the press,“ the cable says.
It continues, „Ahmadinejad’s statements infuriated Revolutionary Guard Chief of Staff Mohammed Ali Jafari, who exclaimed ‘You are wrong! \[In fact\] it is YOU who created this mess! And now you say give more freedom to the press?!’
„Source said that Jafari then slapped Ahmadinejad in the face, causing an uproar,“ the cable says.

Irans politische Führung setzt im Konflikt um die beiden inhaftierten deutschen Reporter auf harsche Worte: Das Außenministerium warnte vor Druck aus Deutschland – entsprechende Aktionen würden „nach hinten losgehen“, sagte ein Ministeriumssprecher.

Die Führung in Teheran reagiert empfindlich auf einen Appell aus Deutschland zur Freilassung der beiden in Iran inhaftierten deutschen Reporter: „Unsere Justiz ist vollkommen unabhängig und trifft ihre Entscheidungen nicht unter Druck“, sagte der Sprecher des iranischen Außenministeriums, Ramin Mehmanparast. „Unsere deutschen Freunde sollten wissen, dass die Ausübung von Druck, um die Meinung des Gerichtes zu ändern, nach hinten losgehen wird.“ Mehmanparast warnte davor, eine rechtliche Frage zu „politisieren“.

Verschwörung der Herzen aufgedeckt

The Iranian Printers and Publishers Union, has forwarded a government Directive to all its members „Not to print any informational or commercial postcards, posters, boxes, packages, etc. with images such as red rose, hearts, half-hearts, etc. in celebration of Valentine’s day.“

In recent years, an increasing number of Iranians in urban areas celebrate Valentine’s day, Halloween, and other Western holidays despite efforts by Ahmadinejad’s government. The majority of holidays on Iran’s current official calender are based on religious or mournful occasions.
