Reza Aslan: Cairo’s Protests Reverberate in Tehran

People wondering whether what began in Iran two years ago could possibly make its way back to Iran in the near future. That is certainly what the Green Movement hopes will happen; its leaders recently petitioned the government for a permit to stage a protest in Iran next Monday in order to „show solidarity with the popular movements in the region and specifically the freedom-seeking movement embarked on by Tunisian and Egyptian people against their autocratic governments.“ There is no chance the Iranian regime is going to let that happen.

Ending the conference the group highlighted that it rejected any statements by Iran labelling the revolution as an Islamic revolution stressing that the revolution belongs to the people and that the MB are part of the people working with them and for them. Morsy stressed that it was unacceptable that there be any outside interference in Egypt’s domestic affairs especially from groups outside advocating violence which is in complete violation of Islam and its teachings.

The People’s revolution in Egypt is by the people and for the people and nobody else can be accredited for it.

Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Hamedani has commented on the proposed march for 25 Bahman (11 February), „The seditionists (opposition leaders) are nothing but a dead corpse and we will strongly confront any of their movements. We definitely consider them as anti-revolutionary and spies, and we will strongly confront them.“

Iran’s chief prosecutor has warned opposition supporters not to hold a rally next week, saying they can expect a response from „vigilant“ Iranians if they do, the semi-official Mehr news wire reported on Wednesday. (…)

Prosecutor General Qolam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said that if Iranians want to show their support for protesters in North Africa, they should do so at nationwide government-sponsored rallies this Friday marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ein bißchen beleidigt

Wieso lieben nicht alle die „Islamische Republik Iran“? Wie ist das nur möglich? Wieso erkennt man ihren weltweiten Führungsanspruch – der doch wirklich für alle Gutwilligen nachvollziehbar ist – einfach nicht an.  (Vielleicht liegt das ja auch am weltweiten Pizzakonsum.) Zumal die Araber müßten jetzt doch dankbar sein! Die Teheran Times beklagt sich:

Unfortunately, some figureheads of the current uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, such as Mohamed ElBaradei and Rachid al-Ghannouchi, have tried to distance themselves from Iran and claim they should not be linked to the Iranian revolution! Ghannouchi, in an interview with Time magazine, has argued that he is totally different than Iranian political figures. He even said, “I am no (Imam) Khomeini!” Good luck Mr. Ghannouchi, but this is not the way an Islamic revolutionary defines himself.

Iran now has a great influence on diplomacy in the Middle East and the entire world. [...] Thus, everyone knows that any link between Iran’s revolution of 1979 and the current uprisings in the Arab world is not a materialistic connection but a meaningful spiritual link that cannot be denied. Clearly, nothing good will come out of the efforts of people like Ghannouchi and ElBaradei to dissociate themselves from Iran, and it would be better for them to learn the lesson of resistance against U.S.–Israeli hegemony taught by the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

Iran’s Chief Justice, ayatollah Mohseni Gorkani said, “Our life, tranquility and peace depend on executions and ghesas” (loosely translated as retaliatory punishment).

Mehr news agency reported that the ayatollah made these remarks in his ethics class without stating where exactly the class was held. According to Mehr during the cleric’s class, the chief justice first read a verse from the Quran about executions and ghesas, and then added, “The issue of executions and ghesas that the Quran dictates, are what our life, tranquility and peace depend on.”

Roter Teppich für einen Geiselnehmer

So einen lebendigen Eindruck und engagierten Eindruck macht Frau Ashton selten; scheinbar unbedingt möchte sie demnächst den iranischen Außenminister Salehi treffen,  – wo der doch schon nicht nach München zur Sicherheitskonferenz gekommen ist. Und sie möchte ihn unbedingt in den Grenzen der EU begrüßen dürfen. Warum nur? Fast könnte man auf die Idee kommen, Ashton möchte den Außenminister der „Islamischen Republik Iran“ ein wenig aufwerten, und ihm zu einem Propagandaerfolg verhelfen.

AFP: The European Union is considering lifting a travel ban on Iran’s new foreign minister to boost hopes for a nuclear accord, officials said Tuesday. „Dr Salehi is foreign minister and the discussion going on is that normally foreign ministers are taken off the banned lists because generally you want to have an interlocuter, foreign minister, who is able to travel and visit,“ EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton told reporters. „And for my part I would be very keen to meet him, not least because of his role in the nuclear program,“ she added.

Aber wie ist das denn nun mit dem Visa für Salehi? Es sieht nämlich so aus, daß er wegen der Münchner Konferenz seine Einreisegenehmigung längst hatte, angeblich ist sie eine Woche vorher vom deutschen Botschafter beim iranischen Außenministerium abgegeben worden;

Der (zwangs-)islamisierte und arabisierte Teil der Gattung Mensch ist in vollem Aufruhr, nur im Iran, wo 2009 alles anfing, herrscht die Ruhe des Friedhofs. Die herrschenden Despoten in den arabischen „failed states“ drohen wie die Fliegen zu fallen, und das Regime, dem es als erstes hätte an den Kragen gehen sollen, verrichtet in Frieden sein mörderisches Geschäft, und wird, wenn nichts geschieht, als Gewinner aus alldem herauskommen.
Die Figuren dieses Regimes verkünden ungestraft, das, was in Ägypten und Tunesien passiert, sei nur ein Echo ihrer eigenen so genannten Islamischen Revolution.

Iran’s Day of Rage

Iranian opposition leaders Mir Hossein Musavi and Mehdi Karrubi have asked the Interior Ministry for permission to hold a rally on February 14 at Tehran’s Azadi Square in support of the recent uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt.

„In order to show solidarity with the popular movements in the region, particularly the freedom-seeking movement of the Tunisian and Egyptian people against their autocratic governments, we hereby request permit to call for a rally –- as Article 27 of the constitution authorizes – on Monday, 25 Bahman (February 14) at 3 p.m. from Imam Hossein to Azadi Square.“

The authorities are not likely to approve the rally. Only state-sponsored demonstrations are allowed in the Islamic Republic, and past requests by the opposition to hold rallies have either been ignored or denied.

Yet the request puts Iranian leaders in a difficult position.

Iran 1979, Arabien 2011?

The Arab demonstrations look nothing like the ones in Iran at that time. In Tunis, Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia with no hint that Islamist groups – let alone al-Qaeda imports – had contributed to his ouster. And in Cairo and Amman, the women and men, boys and girls are marching side-by-side, calling for the right to vote, empowerment and human rights.

For anyone willing to read the message, the writing is on the wall – the Arabs are marching because they wish for transparency, employment and the right to be heard.

These are the voices of people who no longer fear the slogans that, if it’s not dictatorship, its Islamic extremism. They, much more than any Western observer, are aware that Islamic extremism, sharia and religious governance are as stifling as any other form of authoritarianism. The demonstrators have only to look east and see the failure of the Green Movement in post-Revolution Iran to remind themselves of what they do not want. Washington too needs to move on and recognise that the Arabs are marching to escape once and for all any such heavy-handedness. Theirs are movements that can withstand Islamism, for what they truly seek is dignity, work and freedom.

Islamisten vs. Islamisten

Alle jenseits von Ägypten reden mittlerweile hauptsächlich über die Muslimbrüder; denen wird das langsam peinlich. Sie selbst berufen sich schon halb verzweifelt auf “Facebook” und “die Jugend”, die hätten doch den Aufstand gemacht und nicht sie, die besonders harmlosen Muslimbrüder. Und dann hat am Freitag auch noch das ehrwürdige Haupt der “Islamischen Republik Iran”, Ali Khamenei, den Ägyptern erklärt, daß sie die iranische Revolution von 1979 fortsetzen. Die Muslimbrüder haben sich umgehend auf ihrer englischsprachigen Hompage davon distanziert. Kann man ja verstehen, da ist nicht nur diese Sache mit Sunniten und Schiiten, da ist auch noch diese Sache mit Arabern und Persern, und politisch ist das auch gerade ungünstig, sowas gibt eine schlechte Presse im Westen. Und hier hebt der patentierte kritische Mohammedanerexperte natürlich sofort den Zeigefinger steil in die Höhe und flüstert verschwörerisch: Taqiyya, Taqiyya. Sowas schreiben die nämlich nur auf englisch für die künftigen Dhimmis, eigentlich diskutieren sie aber intern schon die Stellenbesetzung für das große Nahostkalifat. Doch jetzt wird es komplizierter. Denn während die Botschaft an dieser Stelle ja schon angekommen sein könnte, fügen die Muslimbrüder in ihrer Distanzierung zum Schluß noch etwas mutwillig folgenden Passus an:

Deutsche Journalisten in iranischer Haft

Marcus Hellwig und Jens Koch sitzen seit mehr als 100 Tagen in iranischer Haft und werden vom Regime als Staatsgeiseln gehalten. Die meisten Politiker und Medien in Deutschland reagierten auf die Verhaftung der „Bild am Sonntag“-Journalisten zunächst mit wochenlangem Schweigen.

Schlimm genug, dass sich so gut wie niemand in Europa für das Schicksal der zahllosen, schlimmster Folter ausgesetzten und von Hinrichtung bedrohten iranischen Oppositionellen interessiert.

Iran: Vertrauensbildender Lernprozess?

Der Iran nimmt für sich in Anspruch, als alte Hochkultur eine besondere Rolle in der Region des Nahen und Mittleren Ostens einzunehmen. Diese Rolle können wir dem Iran nicht absprechen, wenn wir die Region dauerhaft stabilisieren wollen.

In diesem Kontext ist das iranische Atomprogramm zu sehen. Der Iran hat aus seiner Sicht gute Gründe, mit Vorsicht auf seine Nachbarn zu sehen. Einige sind nuklear bewaffnet, wie Pakistan, Indien, und Russland, auch Israel gehört zu dieser Nachbarschaft. Vergessen wir nicht, dass der Iran in den 80er Jahren vom Irak auch mit Giftgas angegriffen wurde. Niemand kam Teheran damals zu Hilfe. So ist es verständlich, dass sich der Iran von Feinden umgeben fühlt. Der Rückgriff auf die nukleare Option kann daher für die Regierung in Teheran als eine logische Konsequenz erscheinen, auch wenn das dem Nichtverbreitungsvertrag widerspräche, den auch der Iran unterschrieben hat.

Ein Außenminister mit Humor und ganz wenig Zeit

Ali Akbar Salehi versteht immerhin die Form zu wahren. Was ja nicht so selbstverständlich ist beim Personal der „Islamischen Republik Iran“. Er mußte also daheim bleiben und durfte nicht nach München zur Sicherheitskonferenz.  Und das warum erklärt er nun sehr schlüssig. Allerdings etwas verschämt auf der für drittrangige Meldungen reservierten Seite der Iranian Student’s News Agency. Die vorangegangene Meldung, man „überlege“ noch, ob man nach München fahren wolle, wurde auch hier veröffentlicht. Auf der Seite des Außenministeriums wurde die ganze Angelegenheit nicht einmal erwähnt. Was dafür spricht, daß Salehi Mitte der Woche schon sehr gezweifelt hat, ob sein Wunschbesuch klappt. Man wüßte ja so gerne Näheres (Jens Koch? Marcus Hellwig?).

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Saturday that his absence in Munich security conference was due to busy schedule. He also expressed gratitude for a letter of invitation sent for him to take part in the international conference.

Concerning his absence in the conference despite the fact that his travel ban to Europe is lifted by the EU, he said, „first, we are now in days of (Dahe Fajr) Ten-Day Dawn and there are many jobs to be fulfilled in these days, so I should be I should stay in Iran and secondly I have won confidence vote recently and there are many unfinished affaires.“

Wie radikale Linke den Despoten helfen

The irony, of course, is that in the most repressive regimes, such as Iran, revolution is well nigh impossible. Revolution is far more likely to occur is moderately despotic regimes, such as Tunisia and Egypt, where at least some basic liberties were preserved. It is the citizens of the most despotic regimes that need the most help from human rights activists. But don’t count on it because too many so-called „human rights“ leaders and organizations misuse the concept of „human rights“ to serve narrow political, diplomatic or ideological agendas. Unless we restore human rights to its proper role as a neutral and universal standard of human conduct, the kind of tyranny and despotism that stimulated the current protests will continue.

Der Skandal um eine deutsche Bank der „Islamischen Republik“

Wozu denn eigentlich noch von Deutschland mitgetragene Sanktionen gegen das Regime in Teheran? Wenn man hintenrum dienstwillig Hilfstellung gibt, die Auswirkungen der Sanktionen zu minimieren?

Die Hamburger, in iranischem Besitz befindliche, Europäisch-Iranische Handelsbank steht nicht umsonst auf einer schwarzen Liste der Amerikaner. Und jetzt ist es definitiv: Die Zahlungen Indiens für iranisches Öl sollen über Hamburg abgewickelt werden. Das war Anfang des Jahres als Provisorium von den Iranern bereits vorgeschlagen worden, den indischen ölfirmen war die Sache allerdings zu heikel. Und weil man offensichtlich trotz aller Bemühungen keine andere Lösung für dieses Problem finden konnte,  soll der Zahlungsweg nun sogar dauerhaft werden. Man hört förmlich das Aufatmen in Teheran. Nur: Ohne Rückendeckung der Bundesregierung werden die Inder sich kaum darauf eingelassen haben. Nach ähnlichen amerikanischen Bitten im letzten Jahr haben nun neun US-Senatoren die Bundesregierung aufgefordert, die Geschäfte der EIH als „one of Iran’s few remaining access points to the European financial system“ endlich zu stoppen.
