Unislamische Wasserschlachten verderben die Jugend

Iranian police have started cracking down on water fights springing up across the country with the arrests of several young men and women who took part in the latest organized water pistol battles. A water fight in a Tehran park on Friday, thought to have been organized through social media websites, was broken up by police who arrested several of the revelers, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Sunday. (…)

Mingling between sexes outside marriage is banned in Iran and conservatives in the Islamic Republic have been scandalized by scenes of dozens of youngsters spraying each other with water in public. (…)

Conservatives say the water fights must be stamped out to prevent what they say is the corruption of Iranian youths, much of which is blamed on a deliberate „soft war“ by the West conducted through TV, films and pop music.

Dear Ronen A. Cohen,

I am very sorry to inform you that the Council of the German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO) has decided to cancel your participation in the 18th International Congress of DAVO in Berlin on 6-8 October 2011.

It is not acceptable that a representative of an illegally established Israeli university in the occupied territories is participating in this conference. The settlement of Ariel represents a clear violation of international law. This cannot be tolerated by DAVO.

I would like to stress that this decision of the DAVO Council has nothing to do with anti-Semitism. Scholars from Israel are most welcome as participants of this international conference – but scholars from an illegal university in the occupied territories are not welcome.

Yours sincerely,

Guenter Meyer

Chairman of DAVO

Iran’s first nuclear-power plant has started adding electricity to the national grid, finally coming on stream after years of delays, according to local media. The connection of the Bushehr plant to the national grid was originally scheduled for the end of 2010.

„Last night at 11:29pm [18:59 GMT], the Bushehr power plant was connected with 60 megawatts to the national grid,“ Hamid Khadem Qaemi, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organisation, told Al-Alam television on Sunday.

He told Iran’s Arabic language TV station that the plant would be officially inaugurated on September 12, by which time it would be operating at 40 per cent capacity.

US opposition to Russian construction of Bushehr rested on three main issues. First was that weapons grade plutonium could be extracted from the reactor allowing the Iranians to construct nuclear weapons. Secondly, the US feared that the Russians and the Iranians were using Bushehr as a cover for the transfer of other sensitive technology that would normally be prohibited. Finally, the US was concerned that the knowledge gained by Iranian scientists working at Bushehr could further Irans nuclear weapons program.

Dying Lake Gives New Life To Iran’s Antigovernment Protests

Iran’s largest lake is dying, but it’s giving new life to antigovernment protests along its receding shores.

Lake Orumieh, one of the world’s largest saltwater lakes, has shrunk by some 60 percent in recent years due to drought and misguided development policies. Environmentalists warn that unless something is done, the lake will disappear forever.

This dire prospect has put locals who depend on the lake on edge. And seeing as the lake straddles the border of Iran’s East and West Azerbaijan provinces, centers of the country’s ethnic Azeri population that have a rich and volatile history of protest against Tehran, the central government is on edge too.

Tensions over the lake’s falling water levels boiled over last week, after parliament, the Majlis, decided against local lawmakers’ proposed fast-track solution to the problem in an August 17 vote. Scores of locals took to the streets of Orumieh (aka Urmia) on August 27, and open conflict with security forces ensued.

„Let’s cry and fill Lake Orumieh with our tears,“ protesters chanted in Orumieh, as well as, „Lake Orumieh is dying; the Majlis is issuing its death sentence“ (see video here).

And what might have been heard loudest by the authorities — already sensitive to any signs of a return of the large-scale protest that followed the country’s 2009 presidential election and wary of any outward signs of ethnic discord in the country’s Azeri regions — were chants like these: „Azerbaijan rise up and cry out,“ and „If Azerbaijan doesn’t rise up, it will lose.“

Telefonate unter Freunden

World opinion is changing in favor of the Palestinian cause and Israel is on its way to collapse, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told head of Hamas political bureau Khaled Mashaal in a phone conversation on Saturday evening, according to IRNA news agency.
Ahmadinejad also added that Palestinians will always enjoy Iranian support.
Mashaal expressed gratitude for the support and said that Palestinian resistance will continue until they reach their ultimate goal. (…)
„Recognizing the Palestinian state is not the last goal. It is only one step forward towards liberating the whole of Palestine,“ Ahmadinejad told worshippers at Friday prayers on international Quds Day – an annual show of support for the Palestinian cause.

Massive Support

Ali Salim Al-Assad, an official in the Syrian Committee for National Unity – an organization established in Moscow to support the Syrian regime – told Pravda.ru that Iran is assisting Syria with weapons, a daily supply of 250,000 barrels of oil, and money totaling $6 billion.

It was also reported that Iran plans to build an air base near the Syrian city of Latakia, which would enable swift delivery of defense equipment to Syria.

Furthermore, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was told, after he warned that Syria would be attacked if it continued suppressing protests, that Syria is not Libya, and that it has response capabilities that include surface-to-surface missiles that could destroy Tel-Aviv.
