Quds Forces in Iraq

The Quds Force, little known in the United States until the assassination plot was revealed, is all too familiar to the military, American military officials here say.

The Shiite militias aligned with the group have killed many Iraqi civilians and security forces this year. And they have also proved to be the United States’ most lethal enemy in Iraq since the American “surge” diminished the capacity of Sunni militants.

The Shiite militias — which often employ rocket attacks and roadside bombings — were responsible for the deaths of 13 of the 15 soldiers killed in June, the most deadly month for the United States in Iraq in the past three years. They are also responsible for a quarter of the assassinations of Iraqi government and military officials this year, according to American officials.

The Quds Force has one goal, according to the officials and analysts: weakening Iraq so it is even more dependent on Iran. Among the first steps in that process, they say, is severing the United States’ relationship with the Iraqi government and keeping Iraq isolated from its neighbors.

Nothing paradoxical?

 There is nothing paradoxical about the super-efficient professional Al-Qods Brigades enlisting a Mexican drug cartel for a hit squad to assassinate Ambassador al-Jubeir. For at least 20 years, Iran’s Lebanese proxy Hizballah has kept itself in funds by drug trafficking, gunrunning and fencing stolen goods and today controls entire networks in Latin America and Africa.
This fact is well known, fully recorded and easily available to anyone interested.

The most competent clandestine organizations often use inept losers like the Iranian-born New York American Mansour Arbabsiar for „dirty operations.“ They tend to be a far cry from the high-IQ superspies of film and fiction. In this case, he may have been the best foot soldier available. Al Qods maintains small sleeper cells among the 900,000 Iranian expatriates living in the United States, more than half of them in California and Texas. But its active agents are by and large of the same substandard caliber as Arbabsiar.

There is another possibility: His Al Qods controllers expected the plot to be foiled. They knew Arbabsiar was under FBI surveillance after an unsuccessful attempt to enter the drug market, and watched him walk into a trap when he tried to hire a DEA agent posing as a member of the Mexican drug cartel.

Had the assassination taken place, it would have been treated as an act of war by the United States, Saudi Arabia and Israel. (The Saudi and Israeli embassies were to be bombed at the same time in Buenos Aires.)

Mojtaba and Soleimani did not intend to go that far or provoke a full-blown war. A foiled plot was to be the cue for a limited armed confrontation which was all their „grand plan“ required – and that result appears to be building up.

Iran would gladly assassinate Saudis

No one knows where the accusations leveled against Iran by US Attorney General Eric Holder might lead. If true, the claim that Iran planned to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington would amount to an act of war against the United States. And that would require a response beyond the jumble of “new sanctions” proposed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

That the Islamic Republic plots terrorist operations abroad is neither new nor surprising. In 1980, the mullahs organized the murder in Bethesda, Md., of Ali Akbar Tabatabai, an Iranian diplomat who’d turned against the regime. The assassin, Dawoud Salahuddin, a US convert to Islam, claimed that the murder was “an act of war” and fled to Iran where he later emerged as an adviser to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The United States was not the only place where the mullahs carried out “acts of war.” Between 1980 and 1995, the Islamic Republic planned and carried out 112 political assassinations in 22 countries across the globe.

Henryk M. Broder über die Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg und den Dialog mit Henkern:

Jetzt hat die Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg die Veranstaltung mit Seiner Exzellentz, dem iranischen Botschafter in Berlin, und Rüdiger Safranski kurzfristig abgesagt. Nicht etwa weil den Literaturfeinschmecker Rüdiger Safranski ein leichter Ekel bei der Vorstellung angefallen wäre, mit dem Repräsentanten eines Terrorregimes an einem Tisch zu sitzen, sondern weil die Stiftung “sich angesichts der im Vorfeld laut gewordenen vehementen Vorwürfe nicht in der Lage (sah), vor allem das Podiumsgespräch, in dem die Akzeptanz der beiden Nationaldichter Hafiz und Goethe in ihren jeweiligen Ländern diskutiert werden sollte, störungsfrei und mit der gebotenen Sicherheit für die Podiumsgäste und das Publikum durchführen zu können”.

Dabei hätte die Stiftung Seine Exzellenz einfach darum bitten können, ein paar seiner “Revolutionären Garden” einfliegen zu lassen, die ganz bestimmt in der Lage gewesen wären, einen störungsfreien Verlauf der Veranstaltung zu Ehren von Goethe und Hafiz zu garantieren. Im Iran schaffen die das mit links. Safranski selbst hat sich zu der Sache nicht geäußert. Möglicherweise hat er die Absage nicht mitbekommen, weil er daheim hockt und sich auf youtube Videos von öffentlichen Hinrichtungen im Iran reinzieht.  Den ganzen Artikel lesen

Obama wird nichts weiter unternehmen …

Despite issuing harsh calls for Tehran to be held to account, the Obama administration does not plan to shift its policy of pressure on the Iranian government after disrupting what officials said was a plot to assassinate a Saudi Arabian envoy in Washington, administration officials said on Wednesday. (…)

While the United States has mounted an intense diplomatic effort with its allies and other countries to condemn Iran, it has limited its punitive measures to imposing sanctions on an Iranian airline and five senior officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who are accused of having links to the men accused in the plot.

More dramatic responses — like military action or a blockade of Iran’s oil industry — are unlikely because of resistance from Russia and China, concerns about destabilizing a region already convulsed by turmoil, and fears of driving up oil prices and rattling the global economy.

Coalition of Thugs

The revelation that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps and its Quds Force had plotted to kill Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States – by blowing him up as he dined at a Washington restaurant – is a stark reminder of the nature of the Tehran regime and its ambitions. But perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the story is that Iran’s thugs are developing a strategic partnership with Mexico’s most violent thugs: Los Zetas may only be the second-largest drug cartel in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s rankings, but they’re probably the most lethal. Schloss Neuhardenberg sagt Dialogveranstaltung mit iranischem Botschafter ab

Der Druck hatte Erfolg (vor allem auch dank der Intervention von Stop the Bomb), das Schloss Neuhardenberg sagt die Dialogveranstaltung mit Henkern ab. Einsicht wollendie Dammen und Herren zwar nicht zeigen, sondern fürchten jetzt um die „Störungsfreiheit“, aber Absage ist zumindest Absage:

Die Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg wird den für Samstag, 15. Oktober geplanten »Hafiz-Tag« absagen. Neben dem Podiumsgespräch um 17 Uhr betrifft die Absage auch das für 20 Uhr angekündigte Konzert des deutsch-persischen Quartetts »Cyminology« um die Sängerin Cymin Samawatie in der Schinkel-Kirche. Bereits gekaufte Eintrittskarten für beide Veranstaltungen werden zurückgenommen und erstattet.

Iranian actor sentenced to 90 lashes for featuring in banned film

Schon wieder Neuigkeiten von Rüdiger Safranskis Dialogpartnern:

For one Iranian actor, life is mirroring art, in the most gruesome of ways. Two years ago Marzieh Vafamehr starred in a film about an actor whose theatre work is banned in Iran.
Now she faces a year in prison and 90 lashes after Iranian officials took exception to the film, which is itself banned inside the country.
Her crime? Appearing in an Australian film which is critical of the Islamic regime with her head uncovered.
Vafamehr, wife of the acclaimed film-maker Nasser Taghvai, was arrested in July after starring in My Tehran for Sale, which touches on many of the taboo issues of modern life in Iran.
„A sentence of one year in jail and 90 lashes has been issued for Marzieh Vafamehr,“ said a report published on Kaleme.com, a news website close to opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. Her lawyer has appealed against the sentence, it said.

Eine Message senden …

Und wie reagiert die Obama Administration auf die vereitelten iranischen Anschlagspläne? So:

“We’re going to work with allies and partners to send Iran a message: we don’t tolerate the targeting of foreign diplomats on our soil,” said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Sie senden eine Message. Ganz multilateral. Drohen sie etwa, den Dialog auszusetzen? Oder gehen sie zum UN-Sicherheitsrat, wo dann Rußland und China ihr Veto einlegen werden?

Zu der völlig gescheiterten Iran-Politik der USA hat Alana Goodmann die richtigen Worte gefunden:

If Iran feels safe planning a U.S.-based attack now, imagine how much more blatant its aggression would be if it had nuclear weapons. Some people like to pretend Israel is the only country that would be seriously threatened by a nuclear Iran. This case is a prime example of how wrong that assumption is.

So far, the Obama administration is handling the plot as a law enforcement issue, even filing charges against an Iran-based member of the Al-Qud’s forces reportedly involved in the alleged attack. Meanwhile, Eric Holder​ has explicitly pointed a finger at Iran, indicating the administration sees this as a state-sanctioned plot. If that’s the case, taking the law enforcement approach will be a signal to Iran the U.S. will tolerate its belligerence.

U.S. Accuses Iranians of Plotting to Kill Saudi Envoy

Federal authorities foiled a plot by men linked to the Iranian government to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States and to bomb the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a news conference on Tuesday.

The men accused of plotting the attacks were Manssor Arbab Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, according to court documents filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. The Justice Department said men are originally from Iran.

There is “no basis to believe that any other co-conspirators are present in the U.S.,” Mr. Holder said.

He said the men were connected to the secretive Quds Force, a division of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps that has carried out operations in other countries. He said that money in support of the plot had been transferred through a bank in New York, but that the men had not yet obtained any explosives.

The Justice Department said in a statement that Mr. Shakuri, a member of the Quds force, remained at large. Mr. Arbabsiar, a naturalized American citizen, was arrested on Sept. 29.

Matthias Platzeck, Rüdiger Safranski und das iranische Regime

Die Nichtregierungsorganisation STOP THE BOMB verlangt die Absage der für den 15. Oktober 2011 angekündigten Veranstaltung „Hafiz zu Ehren“ im brandenburgischen Neuhardenberg. Dort soll der iranische Botschafter Ali Reza Sheikh Attar mit dem Publizisten und Moderator des „Philosophischen Quartetts“ Rüdiger Safranski über den persischen Nationaldichter Hafez diskutieren. Veranstaltet wird das Event von der Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg, in deren Kuratorium sowohl der brandenburgische Ministerpräsident Matthias Platzeck, als auch Mostafa Dolatyar, Vizeaußenminister a.i. der Islamischen Republik Iran sitzen, aber auch der Präsident des deutschen Sparkassen- und Giroverbandes Heinrich Haasis und Bernd Neumann, Bundesbeauftragter für Kultur und Medien.
Der von der Stiftung eingeladene Attar ist nicht nur der Botschafter des mörderischsten Regimes im Nahen und Mittleren Osten, sondern nach Angaben exil-iranischer Oppositioneller auch selbst für Verbrechen verantwortlich. In den Jahren 1980 bis 1985 war Attar Gouverneur der Provinzen Kurdistan und West-Aserbaidschan, wo er persönlich den Terror gegen Regimegegner beaufsichtigte. Laut Presseberichten soll Botschafter Sheikh Attar für die Beschaffungsaktivitäten für das iranische Atomprogramm, sowie für die Überwachung und Einschüchterung oppositioneller Exiliraner verantwortlich sein.

Not welcome in Najaf

As the U.S. draws down its forces in Iraq, fears abound that Iran will move into the vacuum, but in Najaf, a center of Shiite Islam in Iraq, some officials say that Iran wore out its welcome long ago. Surely, Iran has emerged empowered in Iraq over the last eight years, and it has a sympathetic Shiite-dominated government to show for it. But with mistrust toward Iranians that has been nurtured for centuries, Iran has been unable to extend its reach.
In fact, a host of countries led by Turkey, but also China, Lebanon and Kuwait, have made the biggest inroads. „Before 2003, 90% of Najaf people liked Iranians,“ said the governor, Adnan al-Zurufi. „Now, 90% hate them. Iran likes to take, not give.“ „Investment from Iran has almost stopped,“ said Zuheir Sharba, the chairman of Najaf’s provincial council, referring to a phenomenon that has more to do with Iran’s anemic state-run economy than it does to Iranian ambitions.

Women who violate headscarf law should be stripped of passports

Wehe, wenn nur eine Haarsträhne zu sehen ist:

A member of Iranian parliament’s judicial commission on Sunday demanded the government withdraw passports from women who violate a law requiring them to wear the Muslim headscarf, Fars News Agency reported.
He added that 236 members of the Iranian parliament, in a letter sent to the cabinet, demanded strict measures against violators of the headscarf law.
He said the situation of non-compliance with the headscarf law was “worse now than during the rule of reformists,” referring to the former administration of President Mohammad Khatami.
He said state television was partly to blame for not urging women to comply with the law. “I don’t know what kind of brains are running the state television, which airs silly programs,” the conservative head of clerical bloc in parliament said.

Killed by Iran?

Members of the “Quds Force”, a special unit of Iran’s Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, carried out the recent assassination of Mish’al Tammo, a prominent Kurdish political activist in in the Kurdish city of Qamishli. Major Qassim Hussaini (pseudonym), a member of the Quds Force, was in charge of the operation.

Some 200 members belonging to Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG or Pasdaran) were lately dispatched to Iranian embassy in Damascus to monitor the situation and provide moral and intelligence support to President Bashar al-Assad regime.

“Among the Syrian security forces that opened fire on a crowd “Quds Force”, a special unit of Iran’s Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution
of 50000 protesters taking part in recent funeral procession of the martyr Mish’al Tammo, some were chanting pro “Hezbollah” slogans, and praising the group for its valor, an in indication of possible presence of the group’s members, say some eye-witnesses.”

An Iranian student activist has been lashed 74 times for insulting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Peyman Aref, a student of political science at Tehran University was sentenced in March 2010 to a year in jail after being found guilty of propaganda against the regime for speaking to foreign media.

Aref, who was initially arrested in the aftermath of Iran’s disputed presidential elections in 2009, was also sentenced to 74 lashes for writing an „insulting“ letter to Ahmadinejad and given a lifetime ban on working as a journalist or membership of any political parties.

German trade props up ‘Iran’s dictator,’ expert says

Germany, Tehran’s No.1 EU trade partner, continues to lend legitimacy to Iran’s government and to prop up its economic infrastructure, a leading German-Iranian academic told The Jerusalem Post on Saturday.

Bilateral trade “stabilizes the Iranian dictator,” said Dr. Wahied Wahdat-Hagh, an expert on German-Iranian relations and a senior Fellow at the Brussels-based European Foundation for Democracy.

“Even if Germany transfers technology for improving the environmental problems of Iran, it strengthens the totalitarian dictatorship. It would be very cynical if a German ministry would argue that transferring the technology for combating pollution in Iran would help the protests of the democracy movement,” Wahdat-Hagh said.

Bad Safranski oder was ist eigentlich böse? Eine Empörung.

Böse? Äh, zum Beispiel Foltern, Töten, Vergewaltigen?

Frage & Antwort mögen ja tatsächlich so manchem ein wenig schlicht erscheinen. Auf den bekannten philosophischen Schriftsteller Rüdiger Safranski könnte das zutreffen; Safranski hat zwar ein Buch über das Thema geschrieben, aber Berührungsängste mit staatlich angeordneter Folter, mit Mord, und systematischer Vergewaltigung scheint er doch nicht zu haben. Immerhin will er – oder ist das etwa nur eine Propagandameldung der „Islamischen Republik Iran“? – mit einem Herren namens „S. E. (Seiner Ezellenz“, O.M.P) Ali Reza Sheikh Attar“, dem Botschafter besagter „Republik“, am 15. Oktober über Goethe und den persischen Dichter Hafis diskutieren; und nicht etwa über die Fallhöhe von an Baukränen aufgehängten Menschen, oder über die im Sommer 2009 ermordete Neda Agha Soltan (und die anderen Toten, für die sie steht), oder gar über die Vergewaltigungen und Morde im Evin-Gefängnis von Teheran und anderswo im Iran.

Darf man überhaupt im Angesicht der sicherlich wohlgestalteten Gärten, in denen sich die illustren Beiträger dieser vom Deutschen Sparkassen und Giroverband getragenen Stiftung Neu Hardenberg ergehen, so ganz simpel vom Verdacht, nein, besser, vom Ruch einer gewissen Amoralität sprechen?

Busher ein neues Tschernobyl?

IRAN’S first nuclear power station is unsafe and will probably cause a „tragic disaster“ according to a document apparently written by an Iranian whistleblower.

The Bushehr reactor is likely to cause the next nuclear catastrophe after Chernobyl and Fukushima, says the document, passed to The Times by a reputable source and attributed to a former member of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran’s legal department.

It claims Bushehr, which began operating last month after 35 years of intermittent construction, was built by „second-class engineers“ who bolted together Russian and German technology from different eras; that it sits in one of the world’s most seismically active areas but could not withstand a major earthquake; and that it has „no serious training program“ or a contingency plan for accidents.

Kulturdialog mit Henkern

Während im Iran hunderte Inhaftierte auf ihre Hinrichtung warten, pflegt das deutsche Establishment mit den Henkern den Solardialog, den Wirtschaftsdialog und natürlich den besonders feinsinnigen Kulturdialog, bei dem Skeikh Attar, Botschafter der islamischen Republik selbstredend nicht fehlen darf:

Der Botschafter, mit dem Safranski da in den Dialog tritt (und wohl nur im deutschen Kulturbetrieb glaubt man, dass Diplomaten automatisch auch Literaturkenner sind), hat sich in der Vergangenheit weniger durch seine schöngeistigen Tätigkeiten ausgezeichnet, sondern handfest bei der Unterdrückung von Dissidenten im Iran mitgewirkt:

Sheikh Attar ist verantwortlich für brutale Menschenrechtsverletzungen an der iranischen Bevölkerung. Er selbst war als Gouverneur im iranischen Kurdistan und Azarbaijan für Massaker an den Kurden verantwortlich. Er hat – als Stellvertreter des iranischen Außenministers verantwortlich für Sicherheit und Europapolitik – die terroristischen Aktivitäten des Regimes in Berlin und in Deutschland zu verantworten. Sheikh Attar gilt zudem als enger Gefolgsmann Ahmadinejads, der die Koordination der westeuropäischen Botschafter des IRI-Regimes übernimmt.

Ausgetrickst

Olli Heinonen, der frühere Vize-Chef der Uno-Atomwaffenkontrolleure und bei der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde (IAEA) bis August 2010 zuständig für die Nichtverbreitung von Kernwaffen, hat sich äußerst besorgt über das iranische Nuklearprogramm geäußert: „Iran hat uns ausgetrickst. Wir haben uns zu oft vertrösten lassen, haben aus heutiger Sicht vielleicht sogar versagt“, sagte Heinonen dem SPIEGEL. Teheran besitze seinen Informationen nach „von 2014 an genügend Plutonium für eine Bombe“ und sei schon im kommenden Jahr in der Lage, sich als „virtuelle Atommacht“ zu deklarieren.

STOP THE BOMB-Kampagne: „Deutsche Wirtschaft verhöhnt Iran-Sanktionen“

Trotz internationaler Sanktionen werden in dieser Woche bei zwei Veranstaltungen deutsche Iran-Geschäfte angebahnt. Ein Gouverneur der ölreichen iranischen Provinz Khuzestan wird in Dresden für Investitionen und Technologietransfers in den Energiesektor werben, während Vertreter der sanktionierten EIH-Bank bei einem Business-Dinner in Hamburg „mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stehen“. Angesichts der immer näher rückenden iranischen Atombombe, massiver iranischer Beihilfe zur Niederschlagung der syrischen Opposition und einer Hinrichtungswelle im Iransind die Aktivitäten der deutsch-iranischen Wirtschaftslobby nur als zynisch zu bezeichnen.

Die im sächsischen Struppen angesiedelte „EIVENT“ (European Iranian Ventures) veranstaltet am Montag, den 10. Oktober 2011 in Dresden an einem geheim gehaltenen Ort einen Wirtschaftskongress. Seyed Jafar Hejazi, Gouverneur der iranischen Provinz Khuzestan, soll dort zusammen mit einer hochkarätigen iranischen Unternehmer-Delegation deutsche Iran-Geschäfte anbahnen. In Khuzestan befinden sich die größten Ölförderanlangen des Iran, weitere Ölfelder warten auf Erschließung, und ganz offen zählt man dabei auf Technologie Made in Germany. Der Einladungstext verspricht „hohe Bonität und große Chancen für Kooperationen und Investitionen“ in den Branchen Öl, Gas, Raffinerie, Petrochemie, obwohl der iranische Energiesektor seit Herbst 2010 unter Sanktionen steht.

Drohende Hinrichtungswelle im Iran

The Iranian Resistance warns about the planned execution of hundreds of prisoners in Qezel Hessar and Gohardasht prisons. Clerical regime is preparing to execute a number of political prisoners as ordinary convicts.

According to credible reports, over 300 prisoners have been condemned to death in mid-September at Qezel Hessar prison. Among them are political prisoners and those arrested during the period of uprisings. One-hundred-twenty of them are prisoners who staged a protest and revolted against the execution of a prisoner on 15 March 2011. All prisoners condemned to death have been transferred to Ward Two of Qezel Hessar prison which is allocated to prisoners on the death row. Protests by prisoners were faced with added pressures from the henchmen.

Concurrently, in the third week of September, 74 prisoners in Gohardasht prison were condemned to death and subsequently transferred to the death row awaiting their execution. Quelle
