Times Online – Thousands march in Iran opposition protests

By: Nasser Karimi – The Assocated Press… berichtet ausführlich mit Bilder aus von heutiger Demnstrationen in Iran…

Hard-liners attacked senior pro-reform leaders in the streets as tens of thousands marched in competing mass demonstrations by the opposition and government supporters. Opposition protesters, chanting “death to the dictator,” hurled stones and bricks in clashes with security forces firing tear gas.

The opposition held its first major street protests since mid-July, with marchers decked out in green _ the reform movement’s color _ waving V-for-victory signs on major boulevards in the capital.

In some cases on several blocks away, larger crowds marched in government-sponsored rallies marking an annual anti-Israel commemoration, waving pictures of Iran’s supreme leader and president and placards denouncing the Jewish state.

Dazu passend aus dem Kommentar der Times: In recent weeks the regime has quietly cancelled other public events like the commemoration of Imam Ali’s death at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. During August it moved three big football matches out of Tehran, or had them played behind closed doors. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Raus mit dem Achmed: A’jad gets heave-ho from Helmsley Hotel

NEW YORK POST - By CARL CAMPANILE

No vacancy!

The New York Helmsley Hotel last night abruptly canceled a long-planned banquet for next week after finding out that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was scheduled to attend and speak, The Post has learned.

Helmsley representatives told Ahmadinejad to beat it after being informed by the security group United Against Nuclear Iran that the Israel-hating, Holocaust-denying America basher was going to be in the house next Thursday.

Helmsley execs were unaware that Ahmadinejad — who will be in town for a meeting of the UN General Assembly next week — was involved in the event until informed by UANI yesterday.

An Iranian student group had booked the space months ago, said Howard Rubenstein, spokesman for Helmsley Properties.

“As soon as Helmsley corporate management learned of the possibility of either the Iranian Mission or President Ahmadinejad holding a function at the New York Helmsley Hotel, they immediately ordered the cancellation of that function,” Rubenstein said.

“Neither the Iranian Mission nor President Ahmadinejad is welcome at any Helmsley facility. The Helmsley organization is grateful to United Against Nuclear Iran for bringing this matter to its attention so that appropriate action could be taken.”

UANI applauded the New York Helmsley’s move. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Nuclear Watchdog says Iran can make a Bomb

(APA/AP)

The former president on how everyone can strive for the nation’s highest office, plus his thoughts on the Iraq war, religion, and more

By Cal Fussman — As a boy on the farm, I stayed barefoot from the middle of March until the middle of October.

I never have been asked to take off my shoes when I go through airport security.

There’s a cartoon in the other room that goes back to when I announced that I was going to run for president. It was in one of the Georgia newspapers. C’mon, let me show you. See, there’s me carrying a sign announcing my candidacy. And right in front of me is the devil carrying a snowball.

I was in the Navy for eleven years. Except for Dwight Eisenhower, I had more service in the military than any president since Ulysses Grant. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

“The Latest on Bombing or Talking to Iran”

The Opinionator – By Eric Etheridge

Let’s start with the bombing. Ace at Ace of Spades HQ points to a Jerusalem Post story today in which a former Israeli official floats a conditional timeline for bombing Iran.

Israel will be compelled to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities if Western powers do not impose serious sanctions against Teheran by the end of 2009, former deputy defense minister Ephraim Sneh said on Wednesday.

He also points to a second Post story, a report on Nicholas Sarkozy’s comments earlier today on the true goal of Iran’s nuclear program. “It is a certainty to all of our secret services,” said the French President. “Iran is working today on a nuclear [weapons] program.”

Michael Ledeen excerpts those sentences and a few more from Sarkozy’s remarks, and swoons: “He really has his moments, doesn’t he? And he’s really got an intelligence service . . . sigh.”

Jeffrey Goldberg picks up another remark from an AFP story, which reported that Sarkozy “said he would not ’shake the hand of someone who wants to wipe Israel off the map’, referring to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”

80 Political Parties Ask Supreme Leader To Deliver Qods Day Sermon – Protest Movement Leaders Will Participate In Qods Day Ceremonies

Over 80 Iranian political parties have asked Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to deliver the main sermon for Qods (Jerusalem) Day, tomorrow, September 18, instead of Ahmad Khatami and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in order to prevent unrest among the public.

Protest movement leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi, Mohammad Khatami, and Hassan Khomeini (the grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini) have announced that they and their supporters will participate in Qods Day ceremonies, as a sign of their opposition to all forms of oppression and violence.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has warned that they will deal harshly with disturbances of the peace.

Umweltkrieg gegen den Irak?

Columnist: Iran Committing Environmental Crime Against Iraq

In his column in the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassah, Iraqi writer Daoud Al-Basri accuses Iran of committing “deliberate and unprovoked crime” against the Iraqi people and against humanity by diverting into Iran rivers that previously drained into a major Iraqi waterway, Shatt Al-Arab, causing a serious problem of desertification in vast areas of southern Iraq.

Al-Basri laments the failure of “the Iranian Iraqi political parties” to raise their voices against Iran and states that they have opted to keep silent.

In the same vein, Iraqi MP Ahmad Al-’Alwani told the independent Iraqi press agency Eba that Iran, after having exported destruction, explosives and ethnic killings, has now completed its crimes by cutting off water to Iraq.

He said Iraqi officials raise their complaints about Turkey but remain silent about the destruction wrought by Iran.
