Iranian Diplomat On Iranian Payments To Afghanistan President: Iran Supports Afghan Reconstruction

A senior Iranian diplomat has said that payments made by Tehran to the Afghan president’s office are part of Iran’s international obligations towards its eastern neighbor.

After Afghan President Hamid Karzai responded to media reports claiming that his office receives millions of dollars every other month from the Iranian government, Iran’s consul in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, Mehran Khorasani, said that the payments are nothing new.

„They are not exclusive to the administration of [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad,“ he said, adding, „These financial obligations have been accepted during the previous [Iranian] government and will be maintained by governments to come.“

He continued, „[Financial] assistance from the Iranian government to Kabul has been within the framework of international obligations accepted by the country’s neighbors.“

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on October 26 that Tehran’s financial aid to Afghanistan was aimed at helping the war-ravaged country rebuild its infrastructure.

„As Afghanistan’s neighbor, Iran has offered its assistance to the country to improve the state’s infrastructure and we will continue that,“ Mehmanparast told reporters in Tehran.

„Unlike some countries that staged a military attack [on Afghanistan] and spent money on killing Afghan people and disrupting regional security, Iran is concerned about Afghanistan’s security and stability and has always offered help to the state for its reconstruction,“ he added.
