Sie lachen

Iran continues to strive for a nuclear weapon since it is not convinced the West is seriously contemplating a military strike against its facilities, Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Wednesday, adding that Tehran was „laughing all the way to a bomb.“ He added that there was no sign that Iran felt „threatened, despite economic hardships.“ „They’re not coming to these talks with a sense of urgency.“

Iran Smuggling Arms to Syria, Hizbullah through Passenger Jets

Iran is using commercial aircraft to smuggle weapons and explosives to Syria and Hizbullah in Lebanon, the German broadcaster ZDF reported Wednesday.

Citing Western security sources, ZDF said that Iran Air and Yas Air have repeatedly used aircraft designated as passenger planes to transport weapons to the Assad regime and Hizbullah.

The mastermind behind the operation is Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which supports the regime of President Bashar Assad and the Lebanese party, the sources told ZDF.

According to the broadcaster, Turkish security officials found weapons and explosives on board a Yas Air passenger jet in March last year.

Rumsfeld über Iran, Israel und die USA

“I must say that the world is a better place for the fact that Israel, years ago, took out the Iraqi nuclear capability. The world’s a better place because the Israelis went in and took out the Syrians’ nuclear capability. The prospect of Iran with a determined set of leaders who are attempting to impose their view of the world in the region and elsewhere having a nuclear weapon is a dangerous thing.

“Certainly, I would hope that the United States would be supportive of whatever Israel decided to do. On the other hand, if you see the relationship between the United States and Israel at the present time, I would think Israel’s in a somewhat awkward position because the opinions that come out of Washington, D.C. and the White House and this administration have not been friendly to Israel.”

Die Saudis und die Bombe

Former senior U.S. diplomat Dennis Ross confirmed for the first time on Tuesday night that Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has explicitly warned the U.S. that if Iran obtains nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia will seek to do so as well.

“If they get nuclear weapons, we will get nuclear weapons,” Abdullah told Ross during a meeting between the two in April 2009. Ross said he responded to the King’s assertion with a lengthy appeal against nuclear proliferation, but after hearing him out, the king responded by repeating the same line: “If they get nuclear weapons, we will get nuclear weapons.”

Iraner und demokratische Werte

For the first time, there is now empirical evidence indicating that Iranians do indeed hold values that correlate with democratic societies. Mehdi Khalaji, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, commented on the study’s importance in an interview: „It shows that Iranians have democratic aspirations as individuals but the system they are under in Iran is one that does not allow them to trust each other. We have truly been deprived of this process called democracy.“ Addressing the study’s implications, Khaliji stated, „The findings indicate the disturbing gap between the government of Iran and its people; it is further proof of the failure of the government’s Islamic ideology on Iran and the promises they made over three decades ago.“

A massive, highly sophisticated piece of malware has been newly found infecting systems in Iran and elsewhere and is believed to be part of a well-coordinated, ongoing, state-run cyberespionage operation.

The malware, discovered by Russia-based antivirus firm Kaspersky Lab, is an espionage toolkit that has been infecting targeted systems in Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, the Israeli Occupied Territories and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa for at least two years.

Dubbed “Flame” by Kaspersky, the malicious code dwarfs Stuxnet in size — the groundbreaking infrastructure-sabotaging malware that is believed to have wreaked havoc on Iran’s nuclear program in 2009 and 2010. Although Flame has both a different purpose and composition than Stuxnet, and appears to have been written by different programmers, its complexity, the geographic scope of its infections and its behavior indicate strongly that a nation-state is behind Flame, rather than common cyber-criminals — marking it as yet another tool in the growing arsenal of cyberweaponry.
