Doch nach dem Auftritt des Ägypters, der nach drei Jahren turnusmäßig die Präsidentschaft der Bewegung der blockfreien Staaten (NAM) an den Iran übergeben sollte, werden wohl weitere lange Jahre der politischen und diplomatischen Eiszeit zwischen den beiden Ländern Einzug halten.

Denn Mursi machte dem iranischen Gastgeber keine Komplimente, sondern er brüskierte ihn, vollkommen undiplomatisch, unarabisch dazu und – wirkungsvoll. Er sorgte für einen Eklat, als er in seiner Gastrede auf dem 16. Gipfeltreffen der 120 blockfreien Staaten Syriens Führung unter Staatschef Baschar al-Assad ein „Unterdrückungsregime“ nannte. (…)

Mursi ist unter den obwaltenden Verhältnissen nicht bereit, seine Meinungsführerschaft in der syrischen Frage auf dem Altar eines Neuanfangs der Beziehungen zum Iran zu opfern. Die Befürchtungen in Washington also nach den Antrittsbesuchen Mursis in Peking und Teheran, der langjährige enge Partner am Nil gehe nunmehr ideologisch und politisch von der Fahne, haben sich bisher nicht bestätigt. Das ist eine gute Nachricht.

Case for Regime Change in Iran Still Strong

While there isn’t any support for Iraq-style regime change in Washington–nor would such a strategy ever be wise with regard to Iran–there are any number of strategies which the United States might pursue to encourage regime collapse in Iran: Support for independent trade unions; policies to encourage factionalism within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps; better use of Voice of America-Persian and Radio Farda, some of whose correspondents are unabashed in their sympathy toward the Islamic Republic; empowering Iranians to bypass firewalls and increase the cost to the regime of establishing them; sanctions targeting any member of the security services or regime; and democracy promotion.

 

Both Democrats and Republicans have given Iranian leaders more than three decades to come in from the cold, but rather than reform, the regime has only retrenched and become far more dangerous. It’s time to give up on dialogue with the regime, concentrate on direct diplomacy with the Iranian people, and support efforts to encourage them to stand up for their own rights and freedom. It’s time the State Department and White House recognize that there is nothing in statecraft to suggest that the perseverance or protection of ideological and rogue regimes is an American interest, and that not all regimes are worth treating with respect.

Iranian Kurds will not back the regime in Tehran in case of western attack

The head of a major Iranian Kurdish opposition group says Kurds will not stand by the Tehran regime should the Islamic Republic come under military attack.

Speaking to the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya TV, Abdullah Mohtadi said, “We do not support a military attack on Iran, but if western countries entered into a war with Iran, Kurds will in no way back the regime in Tehran.”

Iran, Egypt Won’t be Restoring Diplomatic Relations

Egypt and Iran won’t be reinstating normal diplomatic relations any time soon, presidential spokesperson Yasser Ali told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat on Friday.

The statement comes in the wake of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s visit to Tehran this month, after a 32-year break in ties between the two Muslim countries.

No American president will ever attack Iran

No American president has ever drawn red lines for Tehran and enforced them by showing that transgressions are swiftly and severely punished. Jimmy Carter sat by idly when Ayatollah Khomeini and the founders of the Islamic Republic stormed the U.S. embassy and held Americans hostage for 444 days. Ronald Reagan provided the Iranians with arms – after the Islamic Republic’s Lebanese asset, Hizbullah, killed 241 U.S. Marines in the 1983 bombing of their barracks at the Beirut airport. When the FBI said Tehran was responsible for the 1996 bombing of Khobar Towers, Bill Clinton failed to respond or even name Iran.
If you can kill Americans without any consequences, you can certainly build a nuclear weapons facility without too much concern that the Americans are really keeping „all options on the table“; the White House is not and almost surely never will – no matter who’s calling the shots.

Iran will Kinderehen einführen

Wie im Mai bereits der Großmufti von Saudi-Arabien erklärte, sollen laut islamischen Recht Kinderehen nach dem Vorbild Mohammeds möglich sein und bleiben. Mohammed war 52, während er die Ehe mit der neunjährigen Aisha vollzog. Da Mohammeds Lebensweise oft als vorbildich und nachahmenswert für alle Muslime gepriesen wird, sind derlei problematische Traditionen, die sich auf sein Leben stützen bisher nur schwer zu bekämpfen.

Nun will auch Iran nachziehen und die Ehe für Mädchen unter 10 Jahren legalisieren. Der iranische Parlamentarier Mohammad Ali Isfenani nennt das Alter für das Erreichen der Pubertät für Mädchen mit neun Jahren, davon abzuweichen wäre eine Schwächung der Scharia-Gesetzgebung. Vor der islamischen Revolution waren Ehen unter 16 Jahren nicht möglich. Die Mullahs sind seit ihrer Machtergreifung bemüht jegliches Gesetz an die Scharia anzugleichen und die Gesellschaft islamkonform zu gestalten.

Western intelligence sources said that Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei instructed the Revolutionary Guard Corps‘ elite unit al-Quds Force to increase terror attacks against the West and its allies in reprisal for their support of Syrian opposition groups, the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, Iran’s national security council held an emergency meeting to discuss a special report which claims that the Islamic Republic’s regional interests are being eroded by UN sanctions and the West’s continued support of Syrian opposition groups who are trying to oust President Bashar Assad.

The Foreign Ministry put out a list on Monday of outrageous anti-Israeli and anti- Semitic comments made by the Iranian leadership over the last month alone.

The 14 quotes, two from August 2 and all the rest gathered over the past week, were divided into three categories: threats, deligitimization and anti-Semitism.

Under the “destroying Israel category,” the ministry culled a quote from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad taken from the Fars News Agency last Thursday.

“The Israeli regime is a tool in the hands of Zionists to control the Middle-East and the entire world,” Ahmadinejad stated.

The Iranian president further stated that “the international al-Qods day is the day of unity among all human beings to remove the Zionist black stain from the human society.” (…)

As for anti-Semitism, the Foreign Ministry cited the following report from the Islamic Republic News Agency published on Friday: “He [Ahmadinejad] said Zionists, who think solely of power, wealth and dominance over others, have been inflicting very heavy damage and suffering on the whole humanity for over 2,000 years, especially during the past four centuries.

Universities in Iran have announced that dozens of academic programs in the coming year will be „single-gender,“ which effectively means they will be exclusively offered to men, the Telegraph reported Monday.

According to the report, 36 universities have said that 77 BA and BSc degrees will no longer be coed. Under the new policy, female students will be excluded from a broad range of studies in some of the country’s leading institutions, including English literature, English translation, hotel management, archaeology, nuclear physics, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and business management.

A big loophole

One of Barack Obama’s most senior advisers was paid $100,000 (£64,226) in speaking fees by a branch of a company that does controversial business with the Iranian government.

David Plouffe, a top White House aide who masterminded Mr Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, received the money from a subsidiary of MTN, a South African telecoms firm.

MTN has since 2005 run a major network in Iran jointly with Irancell, a company US diplomats say is owned by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, prompting concerns that its technology may be used to monitor and crack down on dissidents.

Republicans accused Mr Plouffe of taking money from a firm „profiting from the oppressive policies of the Iranian regime“. Congressmen have called for sanctions to block MTN’s Iranian operations.

„David Plouffe may be the biggest loophole in the international community’s sanctions against Iran,“ said Kirsten Kukowski, a party spokesman.

The Iranian regime’s foreign ministry spokesman a television show revealed the mullahs’ fear and panic on the consequences of Assad’s overthrow, the state-run Fars news agency.
“Dangerous developments are taking place in the region… a great sedition is being pursued… they have entered the scene with all their might,” Ramin Mehmanparast said.
Describing the alliance between the mullahs’ dictatorship, Assad regime and the terrorist Hezbollah forces as the ‘resistance front’, Mehmanparast added, “If the Syrian regime falls, they will be able to create rifts in the resistance front and after that they will go after each and every country… Their next goals will most definitely be other countries and movements in the region.”

Kriegsvorbereitungen in Israel

In den kommenden Wochen soll eine Liste mit Namen und Adressen der rund 50 Tiefgaragen veröffentlicht werden, die mit Toiletten und fließend Wasser ausgerüstet wurden, sagte Tiomkin. Dort sollen Israelis auf mehr als 800.000 Quadratmetern im Ernstfall Unterschlupf finden.

Mit „Ernstfall“ meint Tiomkin einen Krieg gegen den Iran und seinen Verbündeten Hisbollah, die gemeinsam mindestens 200.000 Raketen auf Israel gerichtet haben.

„Die Analysen deuten auf einen Krieg an mehreren Fronten hin, der 30 Tage dauern würde“, sagte der ehemalige Zivilschutz-Minister Matan Vilnai der Zeitung „Maariv“. Er bestätigte die Einschätzung von Verteidigungsminister Ehud Barak, dass etwa 500 Israelis sterben dürften, wenn jeden Tag Hunderte Raketen auf die Städte des Landes niedergingen.

US says Iran forming pro-regime militia in Syria

The United States on Tuesday accused Iran of setting up a pro-regime militia in Syria as Washington increasingly ties the crisis there to interference by its long-time foe Tehran.

Western powers are already locked in a diplomatic stand-off with Iran over what they say is its plan to develop nuclear weapons, and tensions are high between US and Iranian patrols in the oil shipping lanes of the Gulf.

Iran and Syria are long-standing allies and joint sponsors of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, but the formation of an Iranian-backed force inside Syria would mark a new and dangerous chapter in an already bloody conflict.

Rights groups say more than 23,000 people have been killed in 17 months of fighting between troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and rebel forces, including civilians killed in the regime’s brutal crackdown.

Gegen Antisemitismus und Islamismus! Kein Al Quds-Tag!

Am 18. August 2012 findet in Berlin der größte islamistische Aufmarsch Deutschlands statt – Anlass ist der sogenannte „Al Quds“-Tag – Quds ist der arabische Name für Jerusalem. Dieser wurde 1979 vom iranischen „Revolutionsführer“ Ayatollah Chomeini eingeführt, um propagandistisch die Eroberung Jerusalems und die Vernichtung Israels vorzubereiten. Seit 1996 demonstrieren Anhänger*innen des iranischen Regimes auch in Berlin.

An der militärischen Umsetzung dieses antisemitischen Unternehmens wird indes in Teheran fleißig gearbeitet: Das iranische Atomwaffenprogramm ist eine existenzielle Bedrohung für Israel, deren Bewohner*innen sich mit dem Wissen um Auschwitz geschworen haben, nie wieder wehrlos antisemitischen Vernichtungswahn gegenüber zu stehen. Daher werden in Israel die Ankündigungen aus Teheran, den jüdischen Staat von der Karte zu streichen, äußerst ernst genommen. Die Bedrohung des Regimes richtet sich nicht nur nach außen, sondern auch gegen „innere Feinde“. Die Oppositionellen innerhalb des Irans sind von staatlicher Repression betroffen. Beispielsweise werden Linke, Gewerkschaftler*innen, Feminist*innen, Queers und religiöse Minderheiten im Iran verdächtigt für ausländische Mächte – insbesondere für Israel – tätig zu sein, wenn sie Widerstand gegen das iranische Regime leisten.

According to research, conducted by the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, there are currently at least 28 Kurdish prisoners sentenced to death on political and security-related charges inside Sanandaj, Orumiyeh, Semnan, Rajaee Shahr, and Saghez prisons in Iranian Kurdistan (eastern Kurdistan). Seventeen of these individuals have received finalized death sentences and 11 have been sentenced to death at their trials in lower courts, and are now awaiting appeals rulings by the Supreme Court.

Talk of military strike ‘makes Tehran nervous’

Iran is disturbed by threats emanating from Israel to strike its nuclear sites and takes such threats seriously, a senior Iran expert told The Jerusalem Post.

The past few days have been dominated by media headlines on a possible Israeli strike, with several reports claiming that a strike is imminent and could come within weeks. Iran has been busy fortifying its air defenses and moving parts of the uranium enrichment program to underground sites to make them immune to an Israeli strike.

Fresh sanctions slapped by the United States are meant to „expose and disrupt“ links between Iran, Lebanon’s armed Hezbollah movement and Syria, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Saturday.

She said the „number one goal“ of Washington and Ankara was to hasten the end of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Damascus and stop the bloodshed, while warning that Syria must not become a haven for Kurdish rebels battling Turkey.

Egyptian officials say it is unwise to exaggerate the prospects of a boom in Egyptian Iranian relations at this moment.

„Eventually things could improve but it is premature now to expect an immediate normalisaiton of relations,“ said an Egyptian diplomat.

According to the same diplomat, who had served in Egypt’s diplomatic mission in Tehran, the call for resuming normal relations with Iranpredates the election of the Islamist president.

„Amr Moussa (Egypt’s foreign minister in the 1990s) tried very hard to give a push to this matter and he was hoping to make a breakthrough when he visited iran in December 1997 at the head of the Egyptian delegation to the Organisaiton of the Islamic Confernce summit there but his efforts were undermined by security warnings to the (ousted) president,“ he said.

Upon his assignment as Egypt’s first post 25 January Revolution minister of foreign affairs in March 2011, Nabil El-Arabi announced plans to resume relations with Iran. However, the plans were subverted by the same security bodies.

Today, these security bodies blame Tehran for supporting the militant groups that executed the Rafah operation – something that Bakaei categorically denied in his talks with Morsi.

Iran hat am Donnerstag eine Syrien-Konferenz abgehalten, während die Uno einen Nachfolger für Kofi Annan zur Weiterführung des Friedensplans sucht. Doch das syrische Regime regiert nicht mehr, es kämpft ums Überleben.

Am Donnerstag hat in Teheran eine Konferenz zu Syrien stattgefunden, an der Vertreter von 29 Ländern teilnahmen. Darunter waren auch Repräsentanten Russlands und Chinas. Die meisten Staaten hatten aber lediglich ihre Botschafter geschickt, und unter den Teilnehmern waren keine Vertreter von Regierungen, welche den Rücktritt des syrischen Präsidenten fordern. Es wurde keine offizielle Erklärung verabschiedet. Die Konferenz war offenbar in letzter Minute organisiert worden. Sie erweckt den Eindruck, dass Teheran zusehends nervös wird, weil es seinen Verbündeten in Damaskus zu verlieren droht. Auch sollte die Konferenz wohl vor derjenigen stattfinden, welche die saudiarabischen Rivalen planen.

An den wirklichen Gefahren vorbei …

Selbst wenn man also der Ansicht ist, dass islamistische Tugendterroristen, die aus den arabischen Revolten einen konfessionellen Konflikt machen wollen, geeignete Verbündete im Kampf gegen islamistische Tugendterroristen sind, die aus den arabischen Revolten einen konfessionellen Konflikt machen wollen, geht der Panzerexport an den wirklichen Problemen, die vom iranischen Regime ausgehen, vorbei. Nützlicher wäre es gewesen, wenn Deutschland sich früher für ernstzunehmende Saktionen gegen den Iran entschieden hätte.

Obwohl das winzige Katar kaum genügend Parkplätze für die vielen Panzer hat, spielt es in der internationalen Diplomatie und auch bei Militäreinsätzen eine wichtige Rolle. Sollte Lindner nicht wissen, was der GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) ist, kann er ja seinen Kollegen Westerwelle fragen. Der besuchte im März das GCC-Hauptquartier in Saudi-Arabien, um dessen „Meinungsführerschaft auch gerade bei der regionalen Konfliktlösung“ zu loben, „die wir unterstützen und auch ausdrücklich ermutigen“. Der GCC ist auch ein Militärbündnis, und in diesem Rahmen kann auch Katar, wie Litauen in der Nato, eine „Offensivmacht“ sein.

Der GCC sandte im vergangenen Jahr Truppen zur Niederschlagung der Demokratiebewegung nach Bahrain. Militärisch notwendig war das nicht, vielmehr diente die Invasion vor allem der Einschüchterung potentieller Aufständischer in den Golfmonarchien. Nicht unwahrscheinlich ist eine GCC-Intervention im Jemen. Dann wird man wohl feststellen können, ob der Leo auch die IEDs (improvised explosive devices) der Jihadisten verträgt, deren Förderung in Syrien die Golfmonarchien mit ausdrücklicher Ermutigung Westerwelles betreiben.
