Iran says it to sue Israel for scientist’s murder

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran said on Monday it will sue its archfoe Israel for the murder last year in Tehran of senior nuclear scientist Masoud Ali Mohammadi.

„The Islamic Republic of Iran’s complaint against the Zionist regime will be lodged to international bodies soon,“ Iran’s acting foreign minister and atomic chief Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

Salehi said Tehran had „finished gathering evidences of the Zionist regime’s involvement in the assassination of the Iranian scientist.“ He did not elaborate.

Hilft Deutschland wieder?

Nachdem Deutschland gerade schon geholfen hat – der Vorschlag eines indisch-iranischen Ölabrechnungsdeals über die Europäisch-Iranische Handelsbank ist jetzt auch von iranischer Seite bestätigt worden – könnte Deutschland schon wieder helfen. Aber langsam sollte doch wohl ein längerer Freigang für die beiden Staatsgeiseln Jens Koch und Marcus Hellwig drinnen sein?

Jedenfalls hat der Iran im Rahmen der jüngsten Verhandlungen über sein Atomprogramm Einladungen verschickt; interessierte Gesandte bei der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde sollen die atomaren Harmlosigkeiten der „Islamischen Republik Iran“ besichtigen können. Ein Täßchen Tee auf den – leeren – Hüllen der iranischen Bombe sozusagen. Alle interessierten Gesandten? Oh nein. Es gibt schließlich gute und böse Länder. Und jetzt raten wir:

“Spiteful states, including the US and certain European countries, will never be invited to Iran to inspect the country’s nuclear facilities,” Avaz Heidarpour, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) told IRNA on Thursday. […] The remarks came after Iran’s envoy to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh said on Tuesday that some ambassadors to the Vienna-based agency would tour Iranian nuclear sites soon. He noted that the decision would also disgrace certain countries, including the US, France and Britain, seek to “slow down the pace of talks.” […] “The plan [invitation] is in line with the Islamic Republic’s transparent nuclear policy,” Soltanieh added.

Sonnenklar! Mhm, wer aus der zentralen 5 plus 1 Gruppe könnte eingeladen worden sein? Mhmmm. China ist eingeladen worden. Die USA, England und Frankreich also nicht. Rußland ist auch eingeladen worden, da bleibt also nur … Deutschland. Na da sind wir aber auf die Antwort aus Berlin gespannt.

Mhmmmm. Und wer sonst noch aus Europa? Ungarn. Aha, da kann man sich auch gleich über Mediengesetzgebung unterhalten. Und der Rest:  Cuba ist eingeladen! Und Nordkorea, Simbawe oder Venezuela?

UPDATE: Russland und China verweigern sich tatsächlich der Propagandashow. Teilnehmen werden: Egypt, Cuba, Syria, Algeria and Venezuela. Und man glaubt es kaum: die Deutschen wurden doch nicht eingeladen.

Iran’s Position In Advance Of 5+1 Talks

In an interview, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told Iran’s official news agency IRNA that his country was ready to discuss a nuclear fuel exchange deal only along the lines that it proposed in the Tehran Declaration.

Mottaki told IRNA that Iran had not received any new offers from the U.S. for the exchange of fuel and that such reports were „games“ played by the Western media.

He underlined Iran’s stance on any fuel swap deal with the West and pointed out that any such deal will be acceptable only within the framework of the Tehran Declaration.

„These remarks are opposite to the reality,“ Mottaki said, speaking in a press conference at Iran’s embassy in Madrid on Tuesday.

“Disziplinierungsmaßnahmen”

Nun, da der Iran fleißig daran mitstrickt, die Aufmerksamkeit der Weltöffentlichkeit auf von ihm mitinitiierte Gaza-Flottillen zu lenken, lässt es sich für die Mullahs ruhiger schlafen. Sie sind innenpolitisch vorerst aus dem Schneider und können ihr Atomwaffenprogramm nahezu ungestört fortsetzen. Was für eine Burleske angesichts der tatsächlichen Gefahren, die allein von Teheran ausgehen!

Wenn das Regime jetzt tönt, den Westen „disziplinieren“ zu wollen, dann offenbart dies nicht nur die zunehmende Handlungsunfähigkeit der Freien Welt, sondern auch, wie tief Letztere schon gesunken ist in ihrem hehren Anspruch, eine harte Linie gegen ein zunehmend hochmütiger werdendes Teheran durchzuziehen. Vielleicht schlägt auch die WM durch (Sarkasmus off).

Iran to ‚discipline‘ West by holding off nuclear talks

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran will „discipline“ the West by holding off talks with world powers over Tehran’s nuclear programme until the end of August, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday.

The hardliner said at a Tehran news conference that Iran would also seek the inclusion of Brazil and Turkey in nuclear fuel swap negotiations with the United States, France and Russia.

Asked when Tehran would talk with world powers over its overall nuclear programme, Ahmadinejad said the „negotiations (would likely occur) after the middle of Ramadan,“ around the end of August.

„We are postponing the talks because of the bad behaviour and the adoption of the new resolution in the (UN) Security Council. This is a penalty, so that they (world powers) are disciplined to learn the way of talking to other nations.“

Protzendes Gewimmer – aufheulendes Zähneblecken

Geschenkt: die neuen UN-Sanktionen sind weichgewaschen und alles könnte noch viel schwieriger für den Iran und sein Atomprogramm aussehen. Aber richtig gut sieht es auch nicht aus. Die Verabschiedung der Sanktionen durch den Sicherheitsrat – und damit auch durch Russland und China – ist eine schwere Schlappe für das Regime. Die „unilateralen“ Verschärfungen der Sanktionen durch die USA und die EU machen die Sache nicht einfacher für Teheran.

Iran says nuclear fuel swap still possible

TEHRAN – Iran state television has quoted the president as saying a nuclear fuel swap proposed by Turkey and Brazil as a solution to the standoff with the West is still possible.

The report Tuesday said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told visiting Turkish parliament speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin that the agreement is „alive and will play a role“ in future talks.

Under the deal Iran would send much of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in return for the higher enriched uranium it need for a research reactor.

The deal does not, however, mandate the halt to uranium enrichment sought by the West.

The U.N. Security Council on June 9 passed a fourth set of sanctions to curtail Iran’s nuclear program over fears it is to develop weapons. Iran denies the charge.

Saudi Arabia gives Israel clear skies to attack Iranian nuclear sites

Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities, The Times can reveal.

In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran. To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert.

“The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way,” said a US defence source in the area. “They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren’t scrambled and no one gets shot down. IAEA chief: Iran ’s nuclear program special case

VIENNA – The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency singled out Iran for the first time Monday as a „special case“ because of suspicions it may be trying to make nuclear weapons. A senior Iranian envoy said Israel was the true threat to Mideast peace.

The statement by IAEA chief Yukiya Amano at the start of the agency’s 35-nation board meeting reflected international concern about Iran’s nuclear agenda, days before the U.N. Security Council is expected to punish Tehran for its refusal to heed demands to curb its activities. It also was in keeping with the generally tougher line taken by Amano on Iran compared to his predecessor, Mohamed ElBaradei, who was occasionally criticized by the U.S. and other Western nations for his perceived reluctance to take Iran to task.

UN Iran sanctions vote likely pushed back

A vote on a new UN Iran sanctions resolution will likely be pushed back due to diplomatic fallout from the Israeli raid on the Gaza aid flotilla, among other reasons, sources said Wednesday.

The Obama administration had been planning to bring a new Iran sanctions resolution to a vote at the UN Security Council on Thursday, but diplomatic sources said the vote is no longer likely to take place this week.

Iran’s Nuclear Coup

What a fiasco. That’s the first word that comes to mind watching Mahmoud Ahmadinejad raise his arms yesterday with the leaders of Turkey and Brazil to celebrate a new atomic pact that instantly made irrelevant 16 months of President Obama’s „diplomacy.“ The deal is a political coup for Tehran and possibly delivers the coup de grace to the West’s half-hearted efforts to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.

Full credit for this debacle goes to the Obama Administration and its hapless diplomatic strategy. Last October, nine months into its engagement with Tehran, the White House concocted a plan to transfer some of Iran’s uranium stock abroad for enrichment. If the West couldn’t stop Iran’s program, the thinking was that maybe this scheme would delay it. The Iranians played coy, then refused to accept the offer.

But Mr. Obama doesn’t take no for an answer from rogue regimes, and so he kept the offer on the table. As the U.S. finally seemed ready to go to the U.N. Security Council for more sanctions, the Iranians chose yesterday to accept the deal on their own limited terms while enlisting the Brazilians and Turks as enablers and political shields. „Diplomacy emerged victorious today,“ declared Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, turning Mr. Obama’s own most important foreign-policy principle against him. The deal will, however, make it nearly impossible to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program short of military action. The U.N. is certainly a dead end. After 16 months of his extended hand and after downplaying support for Iran’s democratic opposition, Mr. Obama now faces an Iran much closer to a bomb and less diplomatically isolated than when President Bush left office.

Israel will have to seriously consider its military options. Such a confrontation is far more likely thanks to the diplomatic double-cross of Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Brazil’s Lula, and especially to a U.S. President whose diplomacy has succeeded mainly in persuading the world’s rogues that he lacks the determination to stop their destructive ambitions.

Get Ready for a Nuclear Iran

In Congress, sanctions legislation also creaks along, but that too is simply going through the motions. Russia and China have already rejected key proposals to restrict Iran’s access to international financial markets and choke off its importation of refined petroleum products, which domestically are in short supply. Any new U.S. legislation will be ignored and evaded, thus rendering it largely symbolic. Yossi Melman berichtet für Cicero nichts Neues, fasst aber zusammen, warum Israel über einen Militärschlag gegen das iranische Atomwaffenprogramm nachdenken muss und welche Probleme damit verbunden sind. Seinem Fazit schließlich ist nichts hinzuzufügen:

Das Dilemma, dem sich Israel und die internationale Gemeinschaft gegenübersehen, lautet: Bombardieren oder nicht? Es wird die existenzielle Entscheidung sein, die eine israelische Regierung zu treffen hat. Und es ist keine Entscheidung zwischen gut und besser, sondern zwischen schlecht und am schlechtesten.

So imagine the surprise of international inspectors almost two weeks ago when they watched as Iran moved nearly its entire stockpile of low-enriched nuclear fuel to an above-ground plant. It was as if, one official noted, a bulls-eye had been painted on it.

The New York Times has a new editorial on Iran, February 9, and it is probably the best one yet. Naturally, it is phrased in ways friendly toward the Obama administration, though a note of impatience appears. Nevertheless, there’s an explosive device contained within it that the writers probably didn’t even notice. Don’t stop reading until you get to it.

In this case, the title tells all: “Time’s Up.” Paragraph 1:

“Over the last four years, the United Nations Security Council has repeatedly demanded that Iran stop producing nuclear fuel. Iran is still churning out enriched uranium and has now told United Nations inspectors that it is raising the level of enrichment — moving slightly closer to bomb-grade quality.”

Wir werden ja immer der Hexerei bezichtigt. Guckt Reuters auch in die Glaskugel oder werden Nachrichtenagenturen wie Reuters irgendwann vernünftig?

Israel zählt knapp 7 Millionen Einwohner – arabische eingezählt. Ist es das, was Rafsanjani sowieso bei seiner Rechnung von 15 Mio. iranischen Verlusten (mit palästinensischen Sunniten in Gaza und in der West Bank)  einkalkuliert hatte, falls er einen atomaren Angriff auf Tel Aviv plane?

Ich denke schon, denn Schiiten sind im Gazastreifen und in der West Bank dünn gesät.

U.S. spy agencies see Iran pushing atom bomb research

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. spy agencies updating intelligence on Iran see growing evidence that Tehran has pushed forward with nuclear weapons research but has yet to relaunch its atomic bomb program in full, U.S. officials said.

Analysts from across the U.S. intelligence community have been finalizing a revised national intelligence estimate (NIE) that is expected to bring the United States more into line with its European allies about the state of Iran’s nuclear program.

Sie vergessen, dass Israel der Vorposten der Freien Welt in Nahost ist – oder sie wollen es nicht wahr haben, weil sie sich momentan auf der stärkeren Seite der Appeaser glauben.

Iran spurns nuclear fuel deal in writing: diplomats

VIENNA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Iran has notified the U.N. nuclear watchdog it rejects key parts of a draft deal to send abroad most of its enriched uranium, designed to ease fears the material could be used to make nuclear weapons, diplomats said on Tuesday.

It was Iran’s first apparently formal answer to the proposal hatched in October and echoed months of dismissive or ambiguous remarks made through the media. The United States rejected Tehran’s reply as „inadequate.“

World powers could hold Iran meeting next week

BRUSSELS – World powers trying to end a standoff over Iran’s nuclear program are weighing whether to meet next week to discuss tougher measures, a European Union official said Thursday as Russia reiterated its reluctance to agree to new sanctions.

The foreign minister of Sweden, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, expressed concern that Iran’s internal strife was preventing it from focusing on international negotiations.

Political directors of the five permanent members of the Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — plus Germany may meet next week, according to the EU official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting had not yet been arranged. The official said the site of the meeting was still under discussion.

ElBaradei ruft zu Geduld mit dem Iran auf

Frühere IAEO-Chef gibt sich zuversichtlich, dass es „früher oder später einen Kompromiss“ geben werde.

Wien – Der frühere Generaldirektor der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde (IAEO), Mohammed ElBaradei, hat den Westen im Atomstreit mit dem Iran zur Geduld aufgerufen. „Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass wir früher oder später einen großen Kompromiss schaffen. Wir müssen aber Geduld haben. Iran ist heute keine unmittelbare Bedrohung. Manche Leute wollen zeigen, dass der Iran morgen eine Atombombe haben wird. Er wird nicht, wir haben das zumindest nicht gesehen. Es gibt keinen Grund für übereilte Entscheidungen“, sagte ElBaradei in einem Interview mit der Tageszeitung „Kurier“.

The best that can be said about Iran’s announcement that it intends to build a further 10 uranium enrichment facilities is that at least we are now clear about its intentions.

Einschub: schön wär’s, doch die üblichen Verdächtigen werden das iranische Atomwaffenprogramm weiterhin leugnen, so wie sie es bisher und gegen jede Einsicht resistent getan haben. Doch weiter mit Coughlin. Sein Fazit:

Time is clearly not on the side of those attempting to talk Iran round. For the past six years, the West has been involved in intensive negotiations with Tehran to resolve this dispute, but all that has happened is that Iran has dramatically increased its nuclear capability while the West has received nothing in return.

This is a situation that can no longer be allowed to continue. If Iran wishes to persist with its defiant attitude, then it must face the consequences.

Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, has argued in favour of „crippling“ sanctions being imposed against Iran, and urgent action should now be taken to implement them as soon as possible, in a last-ditch effort to bring Tehran to its senses. Otherwise the consequences are too dreadful to contemplate.
