PARIS (AFP) – Iran has cut jail terms imposed on seven leading members of the country’s Bahai religious minority from 20 to 10 years, French members of the faith said on Saturday.

The seven, including two women, were arrested in May 2008 and put on trial in January this year on charges including spying for foreigners, spreading corruption, undermining Islam and cooperating with Israel.

They were sentenced on August 8 to 20 years imprisonment, but the French Bahai community said in a statement Saturday that their lawyers had been told orally that the term had been halved.

Bahai on Trial in Iran Worries Brother From Afar

CLINTON, Md. — For as long as Bahaism has existed, the forebears of Rezvan Tavakkoli have abided by it. And over the generations, since the faith’s origin 166 years ago, Mr. Tavakkoli’s people have paid the price of their devotion.

Rezvan Tavakkoli, in Clinton, Md., is awaiting word about his brother, a Bahai leader in Iran who faces a possible death sentence.

They have endured beatings, insults, arrest, vandalism, dismissal from jobs, denial of education and other forms of religious bigotry inflicted by the Iranian Muslims who consider Bahaism an intolerable blasphemy for its belief in a 19th-century prophet and his new revelation emerging from Shiite Islam.

Wieder Bahais eingebuchtet

Passend zur Meldung von Oliver Piecha heute:

Iran arrests banned Bahais over protests

TEHRAN (AFP) – Members of Iran’s outlawed Bahai faith have been arrested in connection with recent anti-government protests and some weapons were seized, IRNA news agency quoted the Tehran prosecutor as saying on Friday.

„They were arrested because they played a role in organising the Ashura protests and namely for having sent abroad pictures of the unrest,“ Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said.

The prosecutor did not say how many Bahais were arrested over the December 27 protests that coincided with the Shiite religious commemoration of Ashura.

Iran bans best-selling paper over Bahai temple

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran on Monday shut down a best-selling newspaper, Hamshahri, for carrying a picture of a temple belonging to the outlawed Bahai sect, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The press watchdog „banned Hamshahri over carrying a picture of the Bahais‘ temple and encouraging tourists to visit this place on its front page“ on Sunday, IRNA said, without giving a timeframe for the ban.

Baha’i-Mitglieder vor Prozess

MEMBERS OF BAHA’I FAITH FACE UNFAIR TRIAL Seven members of Iran’s Baha’i religious community may face the death penalty at a trial that could begin around 18 August. They have not had any contact with their lawyers, and it is unlikely that their trial will be fair. They are prisoners of conscience, held for their beliefs.

The seven have been charged with spying for Israel and “insulting religious sanctities and propaganda against the system”. In addition, their families were told in May 2009 that they were now facing the additional charge of “mofsed fil arz”, or “corruption on earth”, which can carry the death penalty.
