Meine unmaßgebliche Meinung:

Man sollte den Saudis nur dann trauen, wenn man gemeinsame Interessen hat, was die Beseitigung des iranischen Terrorregimes betrifft. Danach muss allerdings endlich mit Saudi Arabien Klartext in Sachen Demokratie geredet werden. Alles andere ist unglaubwürdig. Wenn man Demokratie im Iran unterstützen und herbeiführen will, darf man die sunnitischen „Verbündeten“ nicht aus der Verantwortung entlassen.

Aber ein Schritt nach dem anderen…

Gates ‚hopeful‘ of Saudi support for Iran sanctions

RIYADH (AFP) – US Defense Secretary Robert Gates appealed to Saudi leaders on Wednesday to back a US-led drive for tough sanctions against Iran in a visit to Riyadh and came away „hopeful,“ his press secretary said.

met King Abdullah and the crown prince as part of the Obama administration’s diplomatic push for fresh UN sanctions on Iran, seeking help from an oil-rich ally amid continued opposition from China.

„We are certainly hopeful that the Saudis will use whatever influence they have which is considerable in this region and throughout the world to try and help us in our efforts at the UN so we can get meaningful sanctions enacted against Iran,“ press secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters.

Mahmoud muss zuhause bleiben und kriegt noch eins auf die Nase

Mahmoud wollte eigentlich wieder wegfahren. Weil ihn doch zuhause niemand mehr mag. Und wieder und wieder ist er auf der Landkarte die Länder mit dem Finger abgefahren, wo man ihn empfangen könnte. Syrien, sagt er sich, Mist, da war ich doch letzte Woche schon wieder. Auch Mahmoud weiß, daß er selbst die Geduld seiner besten Freunde nicht mehr überstrapazieren darf. Da hat er eine Idee! Als Repräsentant der allerbedeutensten Regionalmacht der Welt und als Führer der künftigen Supermacht Iran könnte er doch mal in Kabul vorbeischauen. Weltpolitik machen, dummes Zeug erzählen und alle im Westen drucken es wieder einmal nach! Er gerät ins Schwärmen….

Press TV: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has postponed a trip to Afghanistan devoted to providing „solutions for settling the problems“ in Iran’s eastern neighbor.
The one-day visit, originally scheduled for Monday, would be the President’s first visit to Afghanistan since both he and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai were re-elected last year.
„President Ahmadinejad won’t be coming to Kabul,“ an informed source at the Karzai’s office told Press TV on condition of anonymity.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the source added, has, however, arrived in Afghanistan on Monday morning on an unannounced visit.

China, Iran Prompt U.S. Air-Sea Battle Plan in Strategy Review

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. military is drawing up a new air-sea battle plan in response to threats such as China’s persistent military build-up and Iran’s possession of advanced weapons, according to the Pentagon’s latest strategy review.

The Air Force and Navy are seeking more effective ways of ensuring continued access to the western Pacific and countering potential threats to American bases and personnel, according to the Quadrennial Defense Review to be released later today.

The joint Air Force-Navy plan would combine the strengths of each service to conduct long-range strikes that could utilize a new generation of bombers, a new cruise missile and drones launched from aircraft carriers. The Navy also is increasing funding to develop an unmanned underwater vehicle, according to the report.

Das US-Repräsentantenhaus erwartet von Obama bi 31. Januar einen umfassenden Bericht zum Fortgang der Verhandlungen mit dem Iran. Wird Zeit, dass er mehr Gegenwind bekommt, sonst schläft er noch ganz ein.

US lawmakers call for Obama’s report on Iran by January 31

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US House of Representatives called Thursday on President Barack Obama to report by January 31 the progress of his diplomatic outreach with Iran over its controversial nuclear drive.

In a provision of the 2010 defense budget bill, lawmakers said they required Obama „no later than January 31, 2010, to deliver a report to Congress on US engagement“ with Tehran.

The legislation also demanded that sanctions be levied against Iran if the Islamic republic does not „accept the offer of the United States to engage in diplomatic talks“ and also if it fails „to suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities“ related to its nuclear ambitions.
